Thump!

I looked at the vacant spot next to Ginny. When my eyes moved to the floor, I saw Harry was rigid on the spot; he had fainted. I then looked at Draco; he didn’t even appear shocked. He had an emotion in his eyes that I couldn’t venture a guess at. He opened his mouth, and after a moment of fighting to speak, he finally commented.

“Why... didn’t you tell us?”

“Look at Harry,” I said flatly.

Draco yanked out of Lupin’s grip and looked at Harry. I never imagined a Malfoy’s face could go any paler than it already was until this moment. His grey eyes flicked back to me.

“You assume that scar-head’s reaction would be everyone’s?”

Thump!

Everyone looked at the spot on the other side of Ginny; Ron was down as well.

“Not just his,” I responded, looking back at Draco.

“That’s what you meant by ‘I’m dangerous’ on the train? Didn’t you say you could control yourself?”

“You’ve got to be the most ignorant Malfoy of them all,” Cody growled. Everyone stepped back from him, wary, except for Draco (and Ron and Harry, but they were still out cold so they didn’t have much choice). “Just because we can control ourselves when needed, it doesn’t always succeed. You learned we don’t ‘eat’ normally, we can go weeks at a time without having something. The longer you wait, the harder it is to resist.” He turned to look at me and asked, “When was the last time you had something?”

“May 4th.”

Everyone’s eyes widened; it was June 4th. Cody then looked at Draco.

“See what I mean? If you knew what to look for, you could tell without having to ask. You see my eyes?”

Draco looked at Cody.

“So what? They’re black with golden flecks.”

“Can you guess what the black is from?”

It took Draco a moment, but he stepped back a bit when he figured it out.
“It’s the same with Dee.”

“Don’t call me that,” I snapped.

“What shade of purple are her eyes?”

Draco then looked at me, a wary look in his eyes. He squinted and then responded, “Dark purple, almost black. So what?”

“Exactly. What’s the lightest you’ve seen them?”

“The colour of a violet... of her earrings.”

If I could blush, I would.

“There you go,” Cody said curtly. Draco then looked at the feet of the vampire in front of him.

“What’s it like for you? I mean, Deanne just said you pick your people by their scent, but if she doesn’t have any blood, what does it matter? Why do you still waste your time on her?”

Cody’s eyes burned in anger. Even Draco took another two steps back.

“Do you honestly believe that it’s all about how someone smells? It’s like you humans; you do look for beauty, but you also look for personality; love versus lust. Do you really think Deanne’s always been dark, sometimes mean and rude? Sarcastic?”

Draco looked at me, looking for an answer.

“I was told I was a pleasant person; I was just someone that could go up to anyone and talk like we were best friends,” I responded, shrugging. “Look at me now.”

Draco then looked at Cody, his eyes burning in fury.

“You can’t tell if personality changes after someone turns into a vampire,” he responded, shrugging as if it was nothing.

“Draco?”

He looked at me.

“You’ve always smelled the best out of everyone.”

It took him a moment to register this.

“Wait... if vampires can’t get hurt, how did you get yourself in here those few times?” Hermione asked me suddenly.

“It was either look like I got hurt or break through a wall. Can you guys do that?” I pointed out.

“But how...?”

“As you might be able to tell, I can control a fair few of my actions.” Some people winced at this slightly sarcastic comment. “I chose not to run through a wall, I chose to act like a damsel in distress a little while ago, et cetera. If I didn’t, do you guys honestly think you wouldn’t have figured out what I am?”

“Huh...?”

Everyone looked beside Cody’s feet; Harry and Ron were starting to stir. Cody took a step back and sat on the edge of my bed. Naturally, Draco looked angered by this, but his eyes fell onto the stirring bodies of his two enemies.

“I just had the weirdest dream...” Harry muttered.

“Really? I did too,” Ron groaned in response.

“Something about a vampire...”

“Really? That sounds intriguing,” I said sarcastically, smiling big enough to reveal my row of perfect, white teeth. They looked at me, confused, and then seemed to realize. They jumped up, and it seemed like Ron was the only one to back away; Harry stayed where he was, looking at me both in awe and fear.

“What are you worried about? That I’ll kill you?” I snapped.

With that said, Harry fell back into the group that lingered behind my bed. I then looked at him and quietly said, “I told you that you’d be like everyone else when you found out. You didn’t believe me, but I was right.”

Harry kept his face behind a blank mask, but I could see the hurt and thought of failure in his eyes. I knew someone like him before, with the same thoughts, another ‘hopeful’. He was one of the guys I met in my school at Barcelona, and he was determined to win me over. When I told him I couldn’t and that I would be too dangerous because of what my secret, he told me exactly what Harry had, ‘I would never do that’.

Right now, he was running.
