The house is now owned by the National Trust and ITV filmed several scenes at the mansion. John's initials, which he scratched into the archway at the front door, are still visible.

The ravaged fields of northern France were recreated in Ireland's County Wicklow, where the actors spent six days in trenches filled with mud, smoke and rats, lashed by powerful rain machines - and surrounded by eerily realistic artificial limbs.

At the time, the only public clue to Kipling's agony was his famous eulogy to a missing son, My Boy Jack, written in 1915, which gives the film its title.
