Kings cross, I believe is where you go right after death (for Harry anyways. It would probally be diffrent for everybody else). There you choose where you want to go next. You have the chose of "going on" where James, Lily, Sirius went or "go back" and be a ghost like Nick, myrtle and peeves. I think Harry was diffrent because he wasnt killed. It was the part of Voldermort's soul that was in him that died. So instead of going back as a ghost he was alive.
I dont know if Im right but this is my guess.

This chapter was a bit odd, but where else would Harry would of been able to learn all that information? It was the simplest way to tell him everything. It also brought Dumbledore back to tell Harry the truth about his past. So I sort of believe this chapter was essential. Some people say that this chapter was a waste of time, but I believe it was well written.
