Chapter 1
Written by: DracosTheBest

It had been a warm summer night. A typical English night. But it had turned cold; something was different in the atmosphere. The whole Wizarding world could feel it.

Two tall men were making their way towards an old house. One with long, dark brown hair and the other with hair so blonde it was almost silver in the moonlight. The one with the dark hair was walking at full speed while the blonde was falling behind.

“Hurry up, Draco.” Snape barked. Draco hastened his speed now walking right next to Severus Snape.

“Why are you taking me there?” asked Draco, his voice trembling slightly, “You know the Dark Lord will kill me!”

Snape heard the fear in Draco’s voice. Anyone could see Draco was scared. He was shaking uncontrollably.

“You know very well that he wanted us to report to him immediately…” Snape answered.

Draco felt like his heart had just sunk to the bottom of his stomach. He thought that maybe Snape would be able to protect him.

“ …and he won’t kill you. I won’t let him.” Snape finished.

Draco looked at Snape feeling grateful that at least this greasy, hook-nosed man liked him. Snape didn’t notice. He was too busy looking around to make sure no one was following. Draco looked ahead and saw the old house looming up in front of them.

“And how are you going to stop the Dark Lord from killing me? No, don't kill Draco or I’ll beat you up?!” said Draco sarcastically.

“You just shut up and follow my lead, understood?” said Snape glaring at Draco.

Draco stayed quiet the rest of the way. Frantic thoughts were going through his head. How can Snape protect him? The Dark Lord is the most powerful wizard in the world now that Dumbledore was gone! Draco hadn’t finished his task. He was going to get punished for it. Painfully.

How stupid of me to have listened to my father and joined the Death Eaters, Draco thought to himself.

They had reached the house. The Riddle House they called it. It had been abandoned for years and now the Dark Lord was using it as his headquarters.

Snape went up to the door and Draco followed. The older man looked around one last time and took out his wand. Draco -feeling unprotected- did the same. They inched forward towards the door then Snape flicked his wand 4 times and the it slid open.

“Go in.” Snape instructed. Draco hesitated, put his wand at the ready, and slowly he creeped inside. The house was dark, very dark; too dark. There was a faint glowing light coming from a room at the end of the corridor.

“Let’s go.” Snape said pushing Draco slightly to get him moving.

Draco made his way to the glowing light, his heart thumping incredibly fast. Each step Draco took seemed to echo throughout the whole house, declaring their presence. Then suddenly out of the glowing room someone came out. Draco could see that the person had long white-blonde hair. She was a beautiful woman. It was Draco’s mother.

“Severus! Did he do it? Did you do it?” said Narcissa talking to Snape as if Draco wasn’t there.

“He couldn’t do it.” said Snape a trace of hatred in his voice.

Narcissa burst into tears and then suddenly seemed to realize Draco was there.

“Oh Draco! You’re alive! You’re ok! The Dark Lord, he’ll be angry… he’ll punish you…it was all to get revenge on your father…” Narcissa said sobbing and hugging Draco tightly to herself.

Draco let her hug him. Her embrace made Draco feel warmer, calmer, better. When he realized what he was doing he quickly said, “Get off of me mother. I’m fine.” He pushed her away, regretting his action the moment he did it. Narcissa moved on over to Snape.

“Severus, you must protect Draco…you promised…the Unbreakable Vow!” she cried.

“Narcissa, I am clearly aware of what I have promised and what I have to do.” he said looking over at Draco who was watching his mother with fear in his light blue eyes.

Narcissa clutched the front of Snape’s robes, her face so close to his that her tears were forming little dark splashes on the material of his dark robes. She let out a shuddering gasp, “How are you going to stop the Dark Lord from killing him?”

Draco felt weak. He felt like he had been hit with the Talentallegra jinx; his legs kept twitching and couldn’t support his weight so he sat down on a nearby chair.

Snape got a hold of Narcissa’s wrists and calmly pried her fingers loose of his robes. “I don’t have time for this Narcissa,” Snape whispered. “Now, the Dark Lord is not here, correct?”

“N-No. He’s not. He will arrive shortly is all he said to me.”

Snape began to pace back and forth in the small room. Draco sat on his chair wondering what would happen to him…to his mother. A few minutes passed in silence except for the steady sound of Snape’s footfall.

“The Dark Lord should have no reason to kill you, Draco.” Snape’s sudden words startled both Malfoys out of their own thoughts.

“You managed to get the Death Eaters into Hogwarts, Dumbledore is dead…that is all that matters.” Snape said more to himself than anyone in the room.

Narcissa let out a sigh of relief as Draco just sat there staring blankly at Snape. The scene in the Astronomy tower played over and over again in his young mind. The conversation he had with Dumbledore still ringing in his ears. What if he had accepted Dumbledore’s help? Where would he be right now? What would the Dark Lord have done?

Dumbledore said he wasn’t a killer. Draco agreed. After all, he couldn’t kill Dumbledore.

Draco saw Snape walk over to a window and peer outside. There was a gust of cold wind but none of the windows were open. Draco looked at his mother, then quickly turned his eyes back to the ex-Potions Master.

“He’s coming,” Snape whispered as he walked over to Draco’s side, “The Dark Lord is coming.”

The Dark Lord is coming, Draco thought feeling immobilized, death is coming.
