It's kind of sad - the only books this guy has ever written have been about other people's work. Makes him a huge hipocrit (sp?) for trying to bash on J.K. who at least writes something original
I find it sadder that you should criticize a man's entire body of work having failed to profess any knowledge of it or its context within the literary world. Before you attack his originality, I urge you to pick up one of his publications and judge for yourself why he is such a respected, or to some despised, figure in his community. Trust me, the Existentialists and others did not hate him without their reasons, among these Bloom's resolute adherence to his romantic philology.

Yes, Harold Bloom betrayed his ignorance of the Philosopher's Stone when he claimed to have observed numerous instances of the "streching legs" bit, but he also had reasonable, albeit petty, arguments to support his dissent from the majority view expressed in this thread thus far. Had you actually read his original article, rather than a passing reference to it in an interview, I'm sure you would know this. You would also do well to note that Bloom never "bashes on J.K." His grievances are with the novel, not the author he does not once mention. Although I laud your attempt to protect the Harry Potter series I also love, please try to do so intelligently and with a modicum of reason.
This man, I agree, has been a celebrated author, but he has never actually written a book that does not incorporate someone else's. He also likes to gain fame and publicity by insulting authors who do have original ideas, and he is famous for that. This man has decided to sell books by using other people's ideas, and then gain noteriety by choosing to put down the competition. It shows weakness and a lack of confidence in one's own work.
