I agree with my Clone. I think maybe they met at school or on the train to Hogwarts.

Or maybe Sirius had gotten into some trouble during school and pleaded with James to cover up for him or hide him, and maybe since then they had been friends. =D However they met I'm sure it was under interesting circumstances.
