I think he made a point to his critics that he's capable to do some other roles Other than Harry. The message he sent to them was so strong like Alan Strang. Smoking and Nude Scenes are something like part and parcel of the acting world. We should not take it very seriously though Smoking is very dangerous to the Human world.

Coming to the point it's really really good for Dan to taking out the lil step apart from HP. After all HP series has only 7 volumes. He still has only two HP film in hands. After that what can he do as a sudden? Slowly but steadily he's expanding his career. Equus and other projects has given this opportunity to him. Criticisms are like a rainbow it'll fade out so quickly. So as a conclusion Equus opens the window for Dan to the new world.
