Sarah Chapter 5
The Burrow Dezi was in a kitchen. She was amazed at the sight, everything was enchanted to do something, the pans were washing themselves, dishes were being put away... she even saw a pair of knitting needles at work magically. Thump! Crash!
Spinning around, Dezi saw two heads, one was black and the other was a chestnut/chocolate brown. When the brown-haired girl stood up, she seemed to be about Dezi’s height, five foot six.
“Sorry...” the girl mumbled. She reached down to help the black-haired boy, and he seemed to be unwilling when he finally gave her his hand. The girl pulled him up, and he pulled away quickly, nearly making the girl fall.
“You’re welcome, jeez!” As the girl stormed away, Dezi realized the girl was around her age, at least seventeen. Looking at her brown eyes, Dezi realized it was her mom, Hermione, as a slightly bushy/curly-haired teenager.
“Sorry...”
Hermione stopped where she was. She turned around slowly, her back now to Dezi.
“Excuse me?”
“Sorry,” the black-haired boy, who Dezi realized was Harry, spat, unmoving. His back was facing Hermione and Dezi.
“You’ve got a lot more to be sorry about than just that,” Hermione scoffed.
“Like?” Harry asked, still unmoving.
“You want a list?”
Harry turned around slowly. His green eyes burned into Hermione and Dezi. Dezi just watched, confused. She’d never heard of this happening before.
“Yeah, what should I be sorry about?”
“Spreading around my private life is a start,” Hermione huffed.
“If you’re talking about your brainwashed relationship with Malfoy, that was I, not me,” Harry responded, rolling his eyes. “Even I wouldn’t stoop that low.”
Dezi was surprised. How long had her mum and dad been together before they ‘made a mistake’? She was never told exactly, but she never really wanted to know. Looking out the window of the kitchen, Dezi noticed it was snowing. It must be Christmas break...
“But you’d stoop low enough to write those pathetic little notes?” Hermione countered.
“Again, that was Ron, not me. You addressed that to Ron awhile back anyways, as you might remember.”
“Low enough to ignore and give cold glares because of my choices? You can’t blame that all on Ron.”
Dezi realized she didn’t clearly remember the last time she saw her ‘uncle’, Ronald Weasley. She remembered hearing Harry and Ginny fighting about how they should visit, but Harry was mad at Ron for something... she didn’t remember anymore. Was that stupid fight still going on? That must've ben at least four years prior to Dezi's 6th year.
Harry clenched his jaw.
“Look, I’m sorry if Malfoy beat you for once, but you shouldn’t be taking it out on me,” Hermione snapped.
Dezi remembered her mom and Harry always helping her when she was a toddler, but what that because she and him were together? Was he forced? Dezi snapped out of her thoughts again.
“It’s not even about that, Mione.”
“Really? What is it about then?” Hermione asked, raising an eyebrow.
Harry glared.
“See, there you go again. Just because you can’t answer a question it’s all my fault.”
“I never said it was!”
“Then what do you say? I mean, according to your terms, since I can’t seem to get it right.”
Harry was silent.
“Why can’t you accept my choices? Like a true friend would. Honestly, Ginny doesn’t like the thought, but she’s still talking to me and hanging around. Even Lavender and Parvati accepted it. There’s a different between acceptance and liking an idea, Harry. Just accept my choice, and maybe things might be a bit easier.”
“Do you think it’s easy to see your best friend snogging your enemy? Do you think it’s easy to watch one of your closest mates pull away from you? Do you think it’s easy to see the one you’ve actually had feelings for as more than a friend with someone that’s born enemies?” Harry snapped back, eyes flashing angrily. “Just the thought of it is hard to bear with, let alone seeing it happen. It was hard enough to accept the fact that one of the only people I’ve loved turn me down, but to accept my oldest rival and foe together with them is impossible.”
Dezi’s question was answered right there.
“Can you... accept it just enough that we can be friends again?”
Dezi heard Hermione sniffling lightly, but she wasn’t sure if it was from crying.
“Come here,” he said quietly.
Dezi watched Hermione walk up to him and hugged him tightly. Harry hugged her as well, lightly stroking her back sympathetically.
“Cheating on you boyfriend, Hermione?”
Hermione pulled her head away from Harry and looked up at the stairs. Dezi’s attention went to the stairs of The Burrow, her ‘uncle’ Ron was glaring at Harry and Hermione.
“And fraternizing with the enemy, Harry?”
Harry pulled away from Hermione and looked up as well.
“Just drop it, Ron,” he said coolly.
“Taking her side, eh?” Ron spat. “Wonder why...” he had a sarcastic edge in his voice.
“Not taking any sides here,” Harry retorted.
“Really? Certainly looks like it.”
“Are you on the not-trusting-anyone side, Ronald?” Hermione snapped. “Because it certainly ‘looks like it.’”
I glared at the two of them. He turned his cold glare to Harry.
“I thought you were my best mate,” he said, shaking his head slowly.
“Ron...” Harry responded, voice rising in a warning way.
Ron stormed back upstairs, leaving Harry, Hermione and Dezi on the main floor. They could hear his feet stomping all the way up the stairs, getting fainter and fainter the higher he went.
“No wonder I haven’t seen you in so long!” Dezi yelled. Light from the window entered her eyes suddenly...
Dezi shot up from the bed, sweating.
“Bad dream?”
She looked to the left side of her bed and saw Shane.
“Not exactly... just odd... again.”
“Again?”
“Second dream about my parents, that’s all,” Dezi responded, shrugging. She yawned. “What time is it?”
“It’s Saturday morning.”
“How early?”
Shane looked at his watch.
“Seven-thirty.”
“You’re up early.”
“Couldn’t sleep.”
“No wonder you look tired...”
Shane smiled weakly.
“Oh, Madam Pomfrey,” Dezi said as the matron passed by. “Would I be allowed to go or...”
“You’ve still got a few more days here, dear,” the matron responded. Before Dezi could even think of a response, she hustled away to another bed.
“Can I at least have breakfast?” Dezi called back to the matron. Shane chuckled.
“Well I didn’t get any breakfast or dinner last night, I’m starving! I could a whole cow or something...”
“Well then don’t go about four beds down,” Shane responded. Dezi looked down the rows of beds and saw an infamous Slytherin Hazel Zabini, daughter of Pansy Parkinson-Zabini and Blaise Zabini. Dezi chuckled (for the first time in at least a year).
Suddenly, a tray full of pancakes, corn flakes with milk, orange juice and sausages appeared on Dezi’s lap.
“Thank God,” she breathed as she dug in. She inhaled the food within a matter of minutes, the plates and bowls clear of any form of food or drink.
For the next few hours, she and Shane talked for awhile longer. When the lunch bell echoed throughout the castle.
“Well I should eat now before detention...”
“You got detention? What for?”
“Long story,” he responded. “My whole day tomorrow is stuck in Defense Against the Dark Arts because I ‘contradicted the teacher to many times’... and the Potions for mixing two ingredients I kind of stole from the cupboards... got to clean that up now...”
Dezi chuckled and shook her head.
“See you... Monday then?”
“Yeah, probably then,” he responded, smiling. He got up and left the hospital wing, and after what felt like months of being in a dark corner, Dezi finally felt cheery. She finally had a friend that seemed to enjoy being with her as much as she did with him.
