“Mum, Mum” whispered Severus as quietly as possible as to not wake his step-father. “Mum” he whispered again this time giving his slumbering mother a nudge, Eileen turned so fast to face her son that she pulled a muscle in her neck she let out a low hiss of pain that Severus had heard many times before.
“What’s the matter” she said quietly rubbing her neck and sitting up.
“Look” Severus handed his mother his letter. Eileen took the letters; she only had to read the top line of the first to know who it was from. She got out of bed so fast that it made her beaming son jump 6 foot in to the air. He followed her quickly as she headed down the stairs pulling on her pink faded woolen dressing gown, that she had snatched from the back of the bedroom door as she exited.
“O my” she gasped finally as they entered the shabby kitchen, she turned to her son beaming from ear to ear, Severus had never seen her so happy the almost extinguished fire in her eyes was burning once more. She suddenly began to talk so fast that Severus only caught snippets of words like ‘Diagon Alley’, ‘wand’ and ‘pumpkin pasties’
“Mum, mum slow down…... what?” Severus half shouted.
“O Severus your going to love it! Hogwarts is……..amazing, you’ll finally be away from all of this” she said looking around the dingy green kitchen.
The smile that had slowly been forming on Severus’ face suddenly vanished he could not leave his mother here, with him. Eileen read her son’s thoughts, she could tell by the look on his face that he’d worry about her and he was thinking about not going at all.
“Severus” she said softly bending down to his level “I’ll be just fine here, you can’t not go, a wizard is who you are, magic is in your blood and you need to learn how to use it properly. Hogwarts was the second place on the earth where I was the happiest, it was my second home and I know for sure you will love it just as much as I did.” She paused to survey the look of worry on her son’s young features; he looked so much like his father she found her self thinking. Severus stared back at her hardly blinking, how could she think he was scared of going? He so wanted to go, he knew since the age of four there was something about him, he wasn’t scared of going to Hogwarts, in fact he couldn’t wait to learn more about his abilities. What he feared was leaving his mother with his monster of a step-father……… |
