I started reading 'em just after the first movie came out, so I would have been 15/16. I remember picking the philosopher's stone up when I was about 13 and reading the first page and thinking "this isn't anything special," but after the movie came out I read it again and was hooked! I'd finished 'em all in two weeks!

I don't think it matters what age you start reading them, they work on so many different levels. There's the actual story but then there's the humour and the so called "love story" so I think they suit all ages.
