I think that Peter was with Voldie, saw him die and thought that he might inherit some power by using the wand of the Dark Lord.

I think that when he saw that Harry had only a small scar he got really scared and ran. He was/is an incredible coward, and it seemed like the baby was more powerful than Voldie. He clamped down on his grip of the wand and fled just before Sirius could arrive on the scene. Possibly forgetting that he had it at all.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the wand was at the Weasley's all those years?
