We know that our poor Remus wasn't a rich guy, so maybe he just didn't have money to go to Hogwarts in the other way. Except that, he could been tired. He had to contact Dumbledore earlier, I suppose. I don't think any person can come in the Hogwarts Express.

And then, Dumbledore let him travel by train because he knew that the Dementors can appear. That's my opinion
