David Tennant (Barty Crouch Jnr) tonight stars in a three-part story as Giacomo Casanova in a series based in 18th-century Europe. '
Casanova' will air on
BBC3 tonight at 10PM (GMT).
David plays the young Venetian lover who wows the women but offends the Church and spends most of his time as a fugitive.
The series creator,
Russell T Davies, describes Casanova as a man who "loved and respected women with an astonishingly modern mentality." Russell also refers to the character as a 'fraud', saying that, "He wasn't an aristocrat. He lied his way into positions of power with charm and cheek. He's just irresistible."
The cast also includes
Laura Fraser and
Nina Soanya with a cameo from
Matt Lucas of '
Little Britain' fame.
