I thought the tears were needed. It showed that behind the 'hero' there is still a boy, if they wasnt any tears, then it kind of show you that Harry is still the hero, and he has no faults, always brave but never showing his emotions, like modern day man lol. so the scene kind of opened up a new side to the hero.
