Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina beamed as Professor Schmoe praised her list, nodding in reply, but she didn’t dwell on it for long. In the time she had left in the mini activity, she went back over her list to make sure she hadn’t forgotten anything, and an idea occurred to her. She’d also need a clock and a wastebasket in her room - a clock to tell the time and a wastebasket because who wants to walk halfway across the house to throw away trash? She’d just finished adding those items to her list when Schmoe told everyone to return to their desks… which she didn’t have to do because she was already there. She looked up, listening semi-intently as the professor talked about IKEA. She’d heard of the store before but never actually been to one. Most of her parents’ furniture had been inherited from family members or bought at secondhand shops, and she had no idea where Chateau Croyance’s furniture came from… though somehow she doubted it was from a non magique store.

When Tina saw the giant post-it notes earlier, she thought the main activity was going to be drawing a floor plan for the rooms they’d chosen, but to her surprise, Schmoe handed out IKEA catalogs instead. Wait, so all they had to do was go through the catalog and circle items on their lists? That sounded ridiculously easy, especially since she had a clear picture of the furniture she wanted! She thumbed through the catalog, looking for the first item on her list (a leather sofa bed), but she found it wasn’t as easy as she thought. None of the sofas she found fit all of her preferences. She found plenty of leather sofas, but they didn’t have a pull-out bed; she found sofa beds, but the ones in the color she wanted weren’t leather. And holy hippogriffs, why was everything so expensive?! She made a mental note to never buy anything from IKEA when she got her own place; she could find cheaper (and probably better) furniture elsewhere!

After several minutes of looking, she eventually picked the sofa bed that was closest to what she had in mind and checked her list again. Arm chairs were next. This time, things went a little easier. All she had to do was find something in the same color as the sofa bed she picked. Hmm… not the style of chair she would’ve chosen, but beggars can't be choosers! Now she needed footstools to match, preferably something with a built-in storage cube. This time she got lucky! Upon searching the catalog, she found exactly one style of footstool that matched the color of her sofa and chairs and doubled as a storage cube.

End tables were the next thing on Tina’s list. Good, that meant she could look for things in some other color! Don’t get her wrong, she liked the color she’d picked for her sofa, chairs, and footstools, but matching colors got a bit boring after a while. She wanted a dark wood for her tables, but again, the selections didn’t match exactly what she had in mind. Maybe something in an oak veneer would be nice? It was the darkest finish she could find without being black because yeah, black furniture wasn’t really her style. She eventually found an oak table, but it was round instead of square like she preferred and - Eww, what was up with the legs?! They were connected in a way that made the table look like an upside-down bird cage, but it was oak veneer and it had a shelf. Close enough, she supposed.*

Tina begrudgingly circled the weird-looking table and moved on to the next thing on her list: a bookshelf. To her relief, this selection was surprisingly easy! Upon searching the catalog, she found quite a few bookshelves in an oak veneer to match the end tables, but she chose the biggest one she could find. It had five shelves, plenty of space for books and maybe a few other things, and it was surprisingly inexpensive, comparatively speaking. Now she needed an entertainment stand to match. This item was a little harder to find. She wanted something big enough to hold a television and a stereo but not so big that it took up the entire room; the problem was most of the oak veneer stands that looked big enough for a stereo were huge and expensive. It took a lot of searching, but she eventually found one that looked promising. It was oak veneer and had two huge doors on the bottom - maybe a stereo would fit behind the doors. It looked big enough.

Now that she’d picked out her furniture, Tina could move on to the more fun, decorative items. She flipped through the catalog looking for a television and stereo, but there were none to be found. She wasn’t entirely surprised; most of the furniture stores she’d seen didn’t carry electronics so why would IKEA be any different? As for wall art, she preferred to make that herself, so she focused on the curtains, pillows, and area rug for now. Now what colors did she want? She wanted something bright but not gaudy. She soon decided on a blue and lavender color scheme for her room as an homage to her dads’ Beauxbatons house colors. First she looked at curtains. She found quite a few blue ones, but most of them were blackout curtains and she didn’t want those, not for a living room anyway. She preferred something that would let in the sunlight. Eventually she found a set of curtains close to what she was looking for. They weren’t quite the Ombrelune shade of blue, but they’d do. Now she needed pillows. She looked through the catalog, hoping to find something lavender or something with a butterfly (or preferably both), but no such luck. She didn’t find what she was looking for, but she did find a nice blue cushion cover with a white floral pattern. That was sort of pretty; it matched her curtains, and she liked flowers. She circled it before moving on to the area rug. Again, she didn’t find exactly what she had in mind, but she found something she liked - a white rug with a bluish-gray flower pattern that looked similar to the cushion cover she picked, only with the colors reversed. That would do nicely!

Tina was almost finished when Professor Schmoe’s voice startled her. What? They were almost out of time already? But she still had three items left! Asdfjkl! She needed to pick them out and fast. Flipping through the catalog as fast as she could, she came to the lamps section. This was going to be fairly easy; all she wanted was a simple inexpensive table lamp with a metal base. Found it! Now what? Wall clock! Tina glanced over the selections until something jumped out at her. It was a clock with gold roman numerals and a bluish face that would go with her decor. She didn’t know why, but something about that clock reminded her of the sundials from astronomy class. That was a good enough reason for her to choose it. Now all she had left to find was a wastebasket. This seemed pretty straightforward, as there wasn't much choice. She picked a plain white basket that matched her area rug and hurriedly circled it before packing up her things. "Goodbye, Professor," she said politely, handing in her catalog on the way out the door. "Thank you for the lesson!" It was a lot more informative than she initially thought it would be!
