Ayana was now milling between the students and offering them some quiet advice to those struggling, answering some questions and overall making sure her class was progressing in the right direction. This spell was a little tricky, but the next part of their lesson is what they'd all gathered here for.

Unless full names were necessary, then he could see how that might start to make a little more sense.

Then he was even more confused because earlier she had said his answer was correct, that a word was necessary, but this thing that they were doing now did not require words. It did require numbers though, which, of course it did that was kind of the whole point. But the numbers did not come from words, they came from... the thing itself? He wasn't sure how that worked so he just wasn't going to focus on that aspect because it was going to confuse him a little too much. Instead, he went up to the desk and grabbed one of the items - a coin bag - and sat back down. He was just wondering if all of the things of the same type would have the same numbers when he saw what she had revealed on the board and that answered that question. It would also be useful to know if he had done the spell correctly or not.

Indigo took out his wand and made a clockwise motion over the coin bag, making sure to go slowly. "Emfanizou Arithmou." Slowly, the smoky numbers appeared. Indigo quickly picked up his quill and scribbled them down in his notebook in front of him. 6 9 4 3 7 5 0. He glanced up at the board to confirm that was correct. He was satisfied with that, but still a bit confused as he regarded the coin bag. If it was made out of a different material would the numbers be different? Would it matter whether or not there were actually coins in it? Would two different previous owners mean two otherwise identical objects would have different numbers? He had a lot of questions, but didn't voice any of them aloud. Not at the moment, at least.

Wonderful, excellent work from Indigo here. "Very well done." Ayana nodded at him with a smile and moved on to some of the younger students.

She would be able to work with the fascinating little elephants. She wrote the incantation in large, capital letters on her parchment so that she wouldn't forget it.

Avalon made her way to the professor's desk and smiled as she gingerly retrieved one of the elephants. She had been eyeing them since the beginning of the lesson, so it only seemed right that she use them for the activity. Taking a deep breath, Avalon picked up her wand and pointed it at the elephant. She made a few slow counterclockwise circles before stating the incantation. "Emfanizou Arithmou!" she said firmly. But nothing happened. Absolutely nothing.

Raising an eyebrow, Avalon retraced her steps. What did she do wrong? The incantation was correct. She used slow, counterclockwise movements. Ah! Counterclockwise! She remembered that Professor Sissay had said to use clockwise movements. Avalon shook her head sheepishly at her mistake, but quickly tried again, using a controlled, clockwise movement. "Emfanizou Arithmou!" A plume of smoke drifted from the tip of her wand and hovered above the elephant. At the first sign of the 2, she started the horizontal wand movement. The rest of the numbers followed, billowing gracefully out of her wand. 2 3 9 7 4 8 8.

Heeding Professor Sissay's warning that the numbers would disappear quickly, Avalon snatched up her quill and scribbled the numbers on her parchment. Yes! They matched the ones on the blackboard! If only she could have gotten the spell to work on the first try...

Ayana always felt it was best to let the wandwaving part of the lesson go on without too much interference on her part. Avalon here was an excellent example of how students can quite efficiently learn from their own mistakes. "Well done Avalon."

All words were weird if you thought about them too much. ”Different languages have different words for the same thing, so if we were to nuemerologically analyze the meaning of a tree in our language, the result might be quite different from the meaning of a tree in Russia.” Did that even make sense? ”Even with one person using one language there could be different results, like if your name changed because you got married or adopted or something. Different name, different numbers. What does your name say about you then? And if someone gets your name wrong and leaves off a letter, that would entirely screw up the calculations.” For some, their surname represented a long family line or the love of their life. To her, it meant nothing. The name of a man who has left her life before she was even capable of forming any memory of him. Her name was nothing but a word that had always been too difficult to spell. It was a common error for people to forget the second L that came after the B.

Cordelia listened intently and took notes as the professor introduced the concept of arithmal-really-long-word. Holy hippogriffs, that word was a mouthful and yet another example of a word that no one could spell correctly. Number revealing charm. That was words Cordelia could understand. So this spell would produce smoke numbers. Seemed simple enough. Wait, did the professor just say she was casting the spell on the caterwauling charm? You could cast this spell on other spells? This sounded more complicated than expected. When it was time to get an object, Cordelia went up and selected a broken clock from the professor’s desk. Returning to her seat, Cordelia set the clock down on her desk and practiced saying the incantation without her wand. ”Emfanizo Arithmou. Emfa-ni-zo Arith-mou. Emfanizo Arithmou. Emfanizo Arithmou. Emfanizo Arithmou.” Once she was sure that she could say the incantation correctly, Cordelia pulled out her wand and started practicing the clockwise motion without saying the words yet. Eventually she was confident enough to try putting the incantation and wand movements together. ”Emfanizo Arithmou,” she cast on the clock, moving her wand slowly in the clockwise motion. A little smoke spewed from her wand but it disappeared before it could start forming numbers. She would have to try again. Focusing more intently this time, Cordelia again cast the spell on the clock in front of her. ”Emfanizo Arithmou!” This time, stronger smoke came from her wand as she repeated the slow horizontal clockwise motions. The numbers appeared before her - 8 4 2 0 1 6 0 - and Cordelia quickly jotted them down in her notes before they disappeared. The numbers on her paper matched the ones written on the board. She had done it!

Ah, the brilliance of diligence! "Very good, always remember to truly focus on the spell you're casting." They'll get into intent more around Easter, but this was always good advice to offer the young ones.

(Which was not many) With a cautious glance at the door, Oda began to tap her fingertips against her palm to settle herself.

Very quickly, before too many people rushed up there, Oda swiped herself a broken clock. She had been tempted by the coin bag, just for the reminder of her summer that it might have had, but the broken clock felt personal right now. Strangely. Nothing ever felt personal to Odaline. Nothing until now.

She returned to her desk, waiting for others to start their casting so that her voice could be lost under all of theirs. Anything for no attention to come her way. Oda rehearsed the wand movement first, a few times until she felt that it would be second nature paired with the incantation. Which, luckily, was when other people started to do their own work and she was able to cast firmly. "Emfanizou Arithmou!" Were she alone, she may have celebrated the smoke numbers that she was presented with and quickly scribbled them down. 8 then 4 then 2 then 0 then 1 then 6 then 0.

And she had been quick enough that she had time to watch the smoke briefly before it disappeared. Why did broken clocks always bring disappearing things? Families? Smoke? Families? Didn't matter. Shouldn't matter. Doesn't matter.

"Wonderful work Odaline," Ayana encouraged as she passed by the quiet one's desk, smiling warmly. She should be very proud, this was not a simple spell. At the look on her face, Ayana's smile wavered slightly. Perhaps she'd add Odaline here to her list of students to summon.

Ok, yeah Eloise will be needing to take notes now because this was information that seemed important as she got some parchment out and started copying what she said about Pythagorean and all that and Arithmalethilogy. A lot of Greek to her, Profesor Sissay. Oh, she heard charm. ok, now they were getting somewhere.

She wasn't one to judge incantations..ok she was but Emfanizo Arithmou sounds like a failed Italian magician.

Guess no chance of anyone nicking an elephant than well alright. The redheaded fourth year sprung up from her and went up and well too late for an elephant. Sadly, but she took a joystick which looked like it more belonged in an antique shop or museum of gaming. Back to her desk to begin practicing the charm.

"emmmfaNIIIIIIIzoooooo ariiiithMOOOUUU"

yeah still sounded like a failed Italian magician. But she tried again say it properly with the correct wand movements" Emfanizo Arithmou"

Oh look at the cool smoke and numbers 2 9 0 0 0 0 1

Ayana couldn't help the feeling of amusement at Eloise's antics. What an interesting child. "Good work Eloise." Only meant the girl knew perfectly well how to work well in class and take notes.

What he was understanding was that they were going to use a spell on an object and it will reveal numbers. That was it. He made a quick note of that - and the type of Arithmancy because he was sure he was going to forget - before putting his quill back down again.

Did he know what object he wanted to use? Yes! The elephant, there was no other choice! He wasn't, well, competitive but that didn't stop him from rushing up to the front of the classroom as soon as Sissay said that they could begin. There was a small crowd starting to form already but he nudged through as best as he could and swiped up one of the tiny elephants. Hello!

Lucas pushed through the, this time bigger, crowd again and strolled back to his seat. A small smile started to creep onto his face as he sat there, observing the tiny elephant. It was so small! Could he name it?

Dani. Dani the elephant.

Lucas tore his eyes away from Dani the elephant and, instead, looked at the notes he had made, taking out his wand in the process. Emfanizo Arithmou? It really was a mouthful which only meant that he'd have to split it up. "Em-fa-NI-zo. A-rith-MOU. Em-fa-NI-zo A-rith-MOU. Emfa-NIzo Arith-MOU." How long was he chanting this? Again, he didn't know. "EmfaNIzo ArithMOU."

Breathe.

"EmfaNIzo ArithMOU. EmfaNIzo ArithMOU. Emfanizo Arithmou!" That was starting to sound better, yeah? "Emfanizo Arithmou!" There. Did he have to practice the wand movement? He didn't think so! How hard would it be to make slow, clockwise motions? Not very! There was no way he could mess this up that badly.

So, he delved straight into the spellcasting. Pointing his wand straight at the elephant's head, he started making small, steady clockwise motions first, mostly the size of the elephant itself. Which, by the way, was hard to do because the elephant was TINY! "Emfanizo Arithmou!" he called, continuing with the clockwise motions. Sissay said to only move horizontally when the number started to appear but..... there were no numbers. There was nothing.

So, he continued to move his wand in the same clockwise motion, still stuck on the elephant's head.

........ uh.......

By the numbers, this one was fast. Ayana chuckled as Lucas rushed past her to take an elephant, and watched quietly as he seemed to coo at it. Perhaps a gentle reminder that the spell was to be cast on the elephant? Ayana glided towards him, her robe shimmering in the now brighter classroom, and watched happily as he remembered he was in a lesson. "Remember to accurately say the incantation while moving your wand Lucas, and always hold the spell in your mind when you cast." Some students picked up the little details better than others, but she had full confidence in this elephant loving student.

"Em-Emfanizou Arithmou." That incantation, though... Vita found herself frowning. She prided herself on being great at spells, but this one was tricky. A mouthful for sure. "Emfanizou Ar-Ariithmou." Yikes.

She continued practicing, quietly and to herself, trying to get it to feel natural rolling off her tongue. If she didn't have to think about saying it correctly, if it came naturally, her focus could be on making those numbers appear.

Emfanizou Arithmou. Emfanizou Arithmou. Emfanizou Arithmou. .... "Emfanizou Arithmou!" She all but shouted it out when she felt she had the pronunciation right. Realizing just how loudly she'd done it, the brunette raised her eyebrows and looked around as if she was wondering who could've done something so embarrassing. ...yeah.

The wand movement was okay, nothing she couldn't handle, so now she'd combine the two.

Wand at the ready, she went ahead and concentrated, saying clearly for only the second time all lesson, "Emfanizou Arithmou!"

She waited and for a few seconds, she almost wondered if she'd managed it, but then the numbers slowly started to appear. First an 8...then a 4... a 2... 0..followed by a 1... a 6...and a 0.

Was that correct???

By Hypatia, Vita had quite a pair of lungs on her. Ayana was all the way across the room from her when she heard the young woman practice her pronunciation. She grinned and watched as those telltale smokey numbers spilled from Vita's wand, proud. She attempted to catch her eye and nod, conveying that this was very very good work.

Oh, how he would rather be up on the roof right now than stuck inside a classroom contending with all these words and concepts. He still wasn't totally with it even now, but he had at least fixed his eyes on the board at the front of the room rather than the window. All the better to appear engaged, even if he did look kind of glazed over.

It was more luck than judgement that Kaiser managed to tune back in again in time to hear the instructions for the spell they were supposed to be casting, though he still managed to miss the details on exactly why this spell was useful. But, well... that was a future problem.

When they were given the go-ahead to get started, Kaiser moved to the front of the class and grabbed one of the joysticks, the first item he could reach, then returned to his desk once again. He rolled his wand between his fingers and looked around at the others in the classroom for a moment or two, repeating the incantation under his breath in order to get used to it, so he wouldn't trip over the words when the time came to actually cast the spell. "Emfanizo Arithmou... Emfanizo Arithmou..."

Already those around him were producing smoky numbers, but Kaiser still delayed. He tilted his chair back so that it balanced on two legs and kept murmuring that incantation to himself. "Emfanizo Arithmou."

Kaiser supposed that he may as well get on with actually attempting the spell, before the lesson was moved on. Playing catch up was not exactly easy.

Suddenly letting his chair fall back onto all four legs with a loud SLAM, he moved the joystick to the middle of the desk and pointed his wand at it. "Emfanizo Arithmou," he said firmly, moving his wand exactly as he had seen Professor Sissay do so in her demonstration. He had the incantation right, he had the wand movement right, but nothing happened. This, however, neither surprised nor bothered Kaiser. He simply tried again. "Emfanizo Arithmou."

This time, a small wisp of smoke appeared at the end of his wand, but too faint and lacking in substance to really form any clear numbers. Kaiser supposed that his concentration and intent were the problems here; his heart wasn't really in it and his mind was still somewhere up on the castle roof. It was difficult to force this kind of thing. He tried once more.

"Emfanizo Arithmou."

This time, the smoke that appeared started to form the slightly more recognisable shapes of numbers, and Kaiser held his breath so as not to disturb it. He picked up his quill, and quickly noted down what he was fairly certain he could see. There was a 2, definitely, and three... no, four 0s... but the smoke disappeared before he could make out the other two figures, or even double check to make sure he had actually seen what he thought he had seen. Kaiser dropped his quill and took up his wand again, wafting away the smoke with his free hand so that the air was clear for him to try again.

Kaiser lowered his wand again. Was it a trick? Put the wrong numbers up there to try and fool them into thinking they didn't need to do the spell, only for them to mess something up when it came to... whatever they were supposed to do next? He hmmed to himself for a moment, tapping his wand idly on the surface of his desk as he considered the numbers on the board.

Well, there was a 2 up there, beside 'joystick', and a bunch of 0s too, so maybe it was the correct number. In fact, it seemed likely that it was. Satisfied enough with that, Kaiser copied down the rest of the number sequence from the board and leaned his chair onto its two back legs again.

Ayana milled towards where young Kaiser sat, and admired his work ethic. Practicing incantations was quite a dull endeavor, yet he seemed to have fully embraced it. She had turned away to assist another student with their casting when she jumped as a chair slammed down. By Hypatia! "Kaiser, please refrain from leaning back on your chair like that," she requested, firmly. She'd heard far too much about this school, the less loud noises in her classroom the better. "Excellent work on the spell," she said again, softer as she made her way towards him with a smile. Good work.

And as one of those that preferred going by a different name than her given first one, she wasn't very appreciative of Vita's response either. Especially since sterling was also the name of a type of metal (not a very valuable one, either), British muggle money (pound sterling), several towns and thousands of other things. Of course, that problem lead really into what the professor had been trying to impress upon them anyway so....

Approaching the desk, Archer grabbed one of the broken clocks before sitting back at her own desk, placing the clock upon it. Wait, had Professor Sissay said Caterwauling Charm? That caused the prefect to chuckle at the thought of somebody accidentally setting it off....

"Emfanizou Arithmou," she recited, practicing saying the name of the charm so that she wasn't the one setting off the Caterwauling Charm. "Emfanizou Arithmou."

"You're getting the hang of the greek incantation, well done," Ayana nodded in Archer's direction as she passed by her table. Good, very good. Now for the spell perhaps?

She did enjoy Arithmancy (for it was logical, detail-oriented and required extensive analysis), but more than that she felt drawn to their Professor’s teaching methods. The questions Professor Sissay had posed to the class kept Nina in a state of thought, even while others shared their answers, Nina was still thinking about many of the concepts that were posed.

Then there was the matter of introducing new material. Professor Sissay provided such detailed context. Nina often found herself having to visit the library after class to read up on a period of history or the state of the world at a particular time, in order to understand the lesson within a larger context. But already, the connections to the ancient Greek arithmancers had provided her with much of the information she needed.

The spell they were using had dated back to the beginnings of the Hellenistic empire, which was quite peculiar. Thought it made sense all at the same time. For arithmancy and this period of history shared many commonalities. For example, the emphasis on science and logical mathematics, married in with a simultaneous emergence of art and creativity. Airthmancy was primarily based upon logic, but it allowed for flexibility in application too. Something which was only growing more apparent throughout the lesson.

Fortunately, Nina realized she had been a little too immersed in thought before she had missed the demonstration entirely. Drawing herself back to the present moment, the Slytherin frantically began jotting down the rest of her notes, causing her to lag behind the rest of her schoolmates in choosing an item from the front of the room. Not that she cared to have one of the five elephants. She didn’t like animals. Miniatures or not.

Which also meant she avoided the flutterby bush. Animals and plants were just about one in the same. Because she didn’t want to stand their for too long, she quietly reached for a coin bag and hurried back to her seat where she began practicing the incantation. Pronunciation was often key and she intended to get it right on her first try.

"Em-fa-NI-zo arith-MOU."

The wand movement was slightly complicated though. It was worth giving that a few practice rounds as well. Slow, steady, clockwise. She moved her wand to the right, practicing the motion and going horizontally, imagining that the first numbered appeared. Again she practiced the motion a few times until she had exhausted most of the time they were given for the activity.

The fourth year then reorganized her desk slightly, pulling the coin bag in front of her body and lifting her wand in the air. "Em-fa-NI-zo arith-MOU,” she spoke confidently, making a slow, clockwise motion with her wand. A puff of smoke rose to the air, followed by another and another and another. Nina moved her wand horizontally from left to right, revealing more smoke as she went. Once she had reached the end of the line, she quickly swapped her wand out for a quill and scribbled the numbers down in the corner of her parchment, before rewriting them neatly underneath the rest of the notes she had taken during class.

6 9 4 3 7 5 0

This was kind of exciting. In a totally unexciting way. Because she was busy looking disinterested, if anyone asked.

The quiet one speaks. Ayana thoroughly enjoyed watching Nina out of the corner of her eye, from her notetaking to her practicing and then finally to her flawless execution of her spell. Just like she'd assumed, there was a lively brain behind the quiet exterior. "Excellent work Nina, very well done."

She thought as she listened carefully to what the professor was instructing them to do.

Going up to the Professor's desk she grabbed a coin purse and quickly returned to her seat to begin. She was curious to see where all of this was going.

Okay, slow, steady clockwise motions moving to the right. She thought to herself as she started to move her wand. "Em-fa-NI-zo arith-MOU." Eni said over the coin purse and she saw her numbers appear.

6 9 4 3 7 5 0

Quickly Eni jotted the numbers down in her notebook and began to think about what it could mean. Was it a code to unveil something? Was it something about the coin purse? Did the professor put a spell on each object before she allowed us to grab them? What did the numbers mean?

"Well done Eniola." Ayana nodded as she passed by her table, catching the last glimpse of the numbers before they vanished into thin air.

When he was done, he placed his quill down carefully on a blank piece of paper so that he did not spill the ink on the desk and watched as the Professor demonstrated the Number Revealing charm. So slow, steady clockwise motions moving to the right? Got it. Simple enough, he had had to learn more complicated wand movements over the course of the years. The hot air charm for example. For such a simple charm it had a complicated wave.

Getting up from his seat, he walked to the items that they had to work with and after looking at them for a moment, he picked up the broken clock. As he sat back down, he placed the broken clock down and took out his wand from his robe pocket.

He moved his wand clockwise slowly while moving to the right as a grey smokey figure began to appear in thin air.8420160

With his left hand, because he held his wand with his right, he quickly wrote down the numbers in an even more horrible ‘doctors handwriting’ than he normally had before placing down his quill and stopped the charm. Seemed like the numbers were alright…what now?

What now was an excellent question that Ayana was eager to answer, but of course that would have to wait until most of her students managed to get the spell. She smiled eagerly at Dorian when she noted he had perfected the spell, and moved on. Quickly now, so they'd have time for the analysis.

But she could definitely impress him with her new knowledge next time they met.

And now they were to try out the Number Revealing Charm. The brunette walked up to the desk at the front and after some contemplation, took a flutterby bush. Upon returning to her seat, she decided to practice saying the incantation first. "Emfanizo Arithmou, emfaNIzo arithMOU, Emfanizo Arithmou..." it had a funny sound to it. She also tried the wand movement - slow clockwise motions moving to the right. The difficult bits would be keeping her hand steady and making sure that she maintained her focus.

When she thought she was ready, Jade directed her wand at her flutterby bush and cleared her throat. "Emfanizo Arithmou," she said loudly as she made the slow clockwise motion. Oh oh, there was something emerging from the tip of her wand!! Was that the first - oh, darn it. Her hand shook slightly out of excitement and the smokey figure quickly disappeared. She would have to try again. "Emfanizo Arithmou," she repeated, this time focusing entirely on her spellwork. As she did the correct wand movement, she saw grey smoke spill out from the tip of her wand again. The smoke formed itself into seven numbers - 8 1 2 8 7 6 9 - which she jotted down quickly onto her notes as soon as she put her wand down.

Wonderful! Focus pays off! "Very, very good Jade, adding that little extra focus every time will go a long way towards improving your spellwork." At least in Arithmancy, where that extra concentration was sorely needed. This was not a lean-back-in-your-chair kind of subject, as they all knew.

Eying his notes, Maxie groaned miserably. Even they were topsy-turvy. How could his own hand lead him astray like this? He peered around, his large watery eyes unhappily taking in the site of his classmates doing the very best of their abilities. Stupid. Dumb. Maxie took up his wand and mimed the actions of those around him. He put nothing into it- nothing at all- convinced that if he looked like he knew what he was doing no one would bother him.

Oh dear, this young one didn't seem like he was faring well, did he? Hmm. "Emfanizo Arithmou," Ayana said quietly to him as she walked by his desk, eyes twinkling in merriment. She summoned a coin bag from her desk, one of the less popular objects, and placed it in front of little Maxie. He still had plenty of time until they moved on.

... Well, no, he didn't. But Ayana wouldn't discourage the little one from trying.

This was twice in a row that she didn't have anything to add to a class discussion… well, not so much that she didn't have any ideas, just not any she felt confident enough to say. That hadn't happened to her since she was a little first year back at Beauxbatons. She was supposed to have all the answers!

Once again, the answer she'd thought of turned out to be nothing remotely like what the professor was looking for. Figures… The dark-haired Ravenclaw looked up as Professor Sissay spoke, listening more intently than ever. She could only hope that whatever this new concept was would click with careful attention and extensive notes. Okay, so arithmaelthilogy...a method of revealing an object's essence that had no need for words. That made sense so far.

Tina's mood instantly lifted when she heard they would be learning a number revealing charm. She may not be one to blurt out thoughts that may or may not be correct, but spells were something she knew she was good at! Both of the surviving father figures in her life were former charms professors, so it was kind of expected. She watched the spell demonstration closely, jotting down the incantation and wand movements in her notes. Emfanizo Arithmou, slow clockwise movements to the right, horizontal movement when the first number starts to appear… okay, got it!

Tina made her way to the desk at the front of the room to pick an item. She was hoping to get one of the tiny elephants, but unfortunately they were all taken by the time she got there. Her eyes were drawn instead to a colorful flutterbye bush. Gently setting the bush on her desk, she picked up her wand. First things first, practice the wand movement and incantation separately before putting the two together. She made a few slow clockwise movements with her wand, then followed with a horizontal motion. That part was pretty straightforward.

After repeating the movement a couple of times, Tina moved on to the incantation. “EmfaNIzo arithMOU,” said carefully and evenly. That spell was a mouthful, but it was nothing she couldn't handle. “Emfanizo arithmou, emfanizo arithmou…” Okay, enough practicing; time to try actually casting the spell! She brandished her wand, making clockwise circles as she said, “Emfanizo arithmou!” At the first sign of gray smoke forming a number, she moved her wand horizontally, and a series of very faint numbers appeared. Was that first number an 8 or a 3? Or a 6? It was too hard to read!

This was no good. She'd have to try the spell again. “Emfanizo arithmou!” Tina said again, this time with more power in her voice, as she made the wand movement. Once again, gray smoke shot out of the tip of her wand, and this time a sequence of numbers was clearly visible:
8 1 2 8 7 6 9. Tina repeated the numbers over and over in her mind as she jotted them down, trying to commit them to memory just in case they faded before she could finish writing. When she was done, she glanced up at the board to cross reference the numbers she had with the correct result. She'd gotten it right, thank goodness!

Ayana beamed at the young woman as she succeeded in her casting, and watched those lovely smokey eights form from the tip of her wand. "Very good!"

Not something with melons. Why had her mind drifted to melons anyway? Juicy watermelons we’re delicious though.

Focusing Ellie went up to the table and got herself a tiny elephant to practice the new spell on. She had first been set on taking the broken clock but had changed her mind last minute. Returning to her desk she put the elephant down before she pulled out her wand. Wand in hand she started to practice saying the incantation out loud to herself first, several times in a row. "Emfanizou Arithmou, Emfanizou Arithmou, Emfanizou Arithmou, Emfanizou Arithmou!" And then another 5 times or so until she felt almost certain that she wouldn’t be missing any letter. She didn’t want to end up breaking her elephant like she had done with her mum’s flower pot when she had been 6 years old trying the levitation charm for the very first time and it had crashed on her twin brother’s head.

Gripping her wand she aimed it at her tiny elephant and said with little conviction "Emfanizou Arithmou!" as Ellie preformed the slow clockwise motion. Some smoke rose from her tip but it quickly dissolved. "Drats!" she muttered to herself she hadn’t said it too firmly maybe? Trying again she repeated loudly and firmly, eyes set on the elephant "Emfanizou Arithmou!" as she performed the slow clockwise motion. Grey smoke slowly flowed out of the tip of her wand forming into seven readable numbers 2 3 9 7 4 8 8. Knowing that the numbers would dissolve into thin air Ellie quick as a fox wrote down the numbers on her parchment. She had succeeded!

Hard work payed off, and Ayana couldn't be prouder as Eleanor managed to get her spell just right. "Excellent Eleanor!" Very very good. This determination is what she wanted to see in her classroom.

"Emfanizou Arithmoo!" Thomas mumbled, his heart pounding, his mind racing. He sighed as nothing happened. "Emfanizou Arithmoo!" Still nothing happened, okay so was he saying it right or was it something else?

Ayana glided over to young Thomas with a kind smile. "Remember to match the incantation to the wand movement, and really hold the spell in your mind as you cast. Spells in this subject need that extra bit of focus," she smiled and nodded, and demonstrated the spell for him again slowly, enunciating and clearly moving her arm so he would see how it all came together once more.

The praise mostly had Eiji tuning out everything else, his eyes instead focused in the collection of random objects - the elephants in particular. He wasn't sure why the elephants to be honest. He had never been particularly drawn to them. They had always been Auntie Ella's to fawn over and he to help with the cookie decorating if anything. Maybe there was a bit of a pull at nostalgia, for whatever reason, and that it why he was fixating on them so much.

Though his attention was drawn from elephants to the professor as she moved on to the next bit of her lecture. Congratulations, professor, you now had Eiji's undivided attention. Though he had no real vested interest as to the state of his own spells and enchantments, but what window of possibility this did open up was the state of his potions - the brewing itself and his ingredients. This...Arithmalethilogy, had conservation potential. Knowing when an ingredient was ripe enough for picking and which were not. Which were stronger than others so as not to waste them on simpler brews. Likewise, since Nina was always botching potions on purpose, he could give her the weakest and spoiled ones from the batch to at least give some reason as to why her potions failed and to clean out his supplies without the feeling of waste becoming too much of a burden.

Yes, the fires of motivation had been reignited.

However, by the time he had arrived at her desk ... the elephants were all gone so he had to settle on a bottled flutterby bush. Not too much of a loss though...he could give it a pruning between practices and put the clippings into one of the phials he kept in his robes.

But...first things first. Incantation practice.

"Emfanizo Arithmou," he muttered to himself, mostly in a robotic monotone voice to begin simply to make sure he had all the syllables down and pacing correct before he worked on intonation and applying the wand movement to it as well. A few minutes later, when he was feeling confident enough, he turned his wand to the bush and gave his wand a whirl over it and then...waited.

Nothing. He brushed it off as another round of practice, rolling up his sleeves and giving things another go.

This time a few numbers in the sequence appeared, but each more faded than the previous until the final three or so in the sequence was not visible at all...causing the fourth year's brow to furrow in frustration. This was actually a useful spell. He needed to get it right.

He blamed his deskmate. She was being so loud in all her mutterings. Even worse that she managed it before him.

Ayana appreciated the change in demeanour from Eiji, and passed by his desk on her way back to the front of the class, offering a reassuring smile. "Remember to concentrate on the spell as you cast," Ayana added with a nod.

Personally, she wished she was able to go and work on her uneven bar routines, her double layouts were really giving her grief on landing and she needed to work on it…. But she was a responsible (kind of) teenager, so she stopped day-dreaming as the Professor spoke up again and moved the class on.

She beamed as they were given compliments. Holly liked being right. Scribbling down notes, statistics and key terms was normal and all well-and-good until Professor Sissay started talking about things that she couldn’t spell. Worried, she nibbled on her lip trying to figure out how to write ‘Pythagorean’ … thankful that the Professor took a pause. However, just as she thought she had gotten over the worst of it, Sissay continued talking about ‘Arithmalethilogy’... She had no idea how to write that, but she could write down when it started and what it was… She’d ask for clarification on the name later.

Arith--something--logy. She left a gap in her notes.

Number revealing charm. Okay. Magic. Charms. That was better… as long as it wasn’t transfiguration… She still wasn’t that great in that class. Professor Darlington scared her… but at least they had a new Professor this year, so she could put the whole fire thing behind her… Hopefully. Maybe. Shereallyhatedfire.

Blinking and shaking her head, Holly nibbled on her bottom lip as she listened to the incantation. Muttering to herself, she repeated it over and over to herself as she listened to the rest of the instructions. Clockwise circles, horizontal movement as each number appears… There should be six numbers if done correctly. No pressure.

Making sure to leave her quill with her parchment for if when the charm worked, she slipped from her seat and moved to the Professor’s desk. Okay.. She’d try… one of the… broken clocks. They looked golden but slightly bruised. Like they needed love and attention. So could do that. Or at the very least, try.

Lifting her wand, she made circular motions in the air making sure she was making the right design, moving as it should… When she was happy with that feeling, and it felt less disorientating to move her arm without moving any other part of her body, she looked back to the board.

”emfanzo arithmoux-- No, not that wasn’t it…. Emfanizo Arithou… No.” Stopping herself, Holly looked up at the board, careful to keep herself on track as she tried again, trying to get her tongue to slip and twist around the syllables just right. ”Emfanizo Arithmou” Hey, that sounded a bit better… She looked around the classroom for Professor Sissay, trying to hear if she was correcting anyone else’s pronounciation so she could hear her saying it again.

No such luck… or at least not that she could hear. So she tried again, this time picking up her wand because it sounded right to her.

”Emfanizo Arithmou” She whispered, turning her wand in the clockwise circle, only for nothing to happen. Merlin. She thought, lowering her wand to break any sort of potential connection to the last try - and then she tried again. And again and again.

Ayana approached Holly's desk with an encouraging smile. "The incantation must be exactly timed with the wand movements, you've almost got it," she offered kindly, and nodded towards her wand. All things must work together to end in success.

Well, the wandmaker at Ollivander's did say that it took longer to master spells with a wand like hers. She tried again and a puff of smoke appeared. They formed 7 numbers.

8 4 2 0 1 6 0

Analiese quickly jotted down the results on a piece of parchment. This was fun. She had a feeling arithmancy would be one of her best subjects at Hogwarts.

Little Analiese was last on Ayana's stop to the front of the classroom, and Ayana smiled proudly as the little one excelled at the spell and her numbers proudly appeared from her wand. "Tighter on those clockwise wand motions, Analiese, they'll help with casting the spell again," Ayana added, and with a flourish spun around to face the student at the front of the class.

"Wonderful, most of you have managed to successfully cast the charm and revealed the true numbers of the objects in front of you!" An oversimplification, but one that was necessary for the first lesson of the term. In the upcoming months, they'd see the world isn't quite as simple. Because yes children, this is simple. Ayana had full faith everyone would be able to keep up as the lessons get progressively more complex, but it meant that they all really needed to understand today. "For those of you who haven't yet, there will be plenty of time for that during your homework assignment," Ayana's eyes twinkled and she moved to the blackboard.

"Now that we have our numbers, we are presented with a very obvious question that I'm sure has occurred to most of you; what do they mean?" she looked around the room, making sure she had everyone's attention, and tapped the board to reveal a chart. "This here is an abbreviated list of the single digit system used in Arithmalethilogy. It also appears in page thirty-five in your textbooks, so there is no reason to write it into your notes," Ayana added the last bit quickly, before any panicked quills would race across parchments in sloppy handwriting.

"Some of these number meanings are quite similar to those in predicative numerology, while others are vastly different. This is because, as we discussed, we are no longer looking at Arithmancy from a human standpoint, but rather a natural one. The deeper you go into the analysis, the more accurate the results become, and the more you can glean from a simple seven numbered series." She briefly paused, then tapped the board again to change the way the numbers of her chosen example objects were presented, with the middle figure now slightly larger.

"We will now move on to how we analyse these numbers. Initially, we always look at the fourth digit, which is the center number in the series," Ayana gestured towards said numbers. "These are the guiding force of the object, its purpose or its main state. After that, we move on to reading the series as a whole, and trying to spot some common combinations. These combinations have an added meaning, an understanding about a certain aspect of the object that would not have otherwise been clear if we had studied the digits separately."

Ayana paused again, allowing them all to take notes and to let this new information sink it. It's all in their books of course, but the written word will never be quite as efficient as a lesson. After moving to the other side of the board, Ayana smiled again. "What can you learn about the objects that you perhaps did not know before, using these numbers? What properties make themselves known instantly through the numbers? Do you see any patters? Today is all about practicing our analysis skills, and we will carry on with this in our next lessons.

You are permitted to work in pairs or groups of threes. Please keep the noise level down, and any questions you may have, do not hesitate to ask! You will later have to hand in analysis essay to me as your homework, so this is a great opportunity to practice just that."

Good? Good.

The Single Digit System

0 - DUAL PURPOSE - death, finality, unnatural OR emptiness, nothing, decay
1 - independence, energetic, solitude
2 - duality, unity, collaboration
3 - foundation, versatility, growth
4 - severe, structured, rigorous
5 - average, adaptable, change
6 - chaotic, disorder, scatter
7 - power, shape-shifting, superiority
8 - infinity, repeatable, life
9 - complexity, high leveled, intricate

Analysis Numbers

Elephant - 2 3 9 7 4 8 8
Coin bag - 6 9 4 3 7 5 0
Flutterby bush - 8 1 2 8 7 6 9
Broken clock - 8 4 2 0 1 6 0
Joystick - 2 9 0 0 0 0 1
Caterwhauling charm - 6 4 4 7 5 9 9

Common Combinations

These commonly appear in many analyses, and often signify the following:

Double nine (99) or double seven (77): immense power, nine in effect and seven in magical potency. Generally, repeating numbers signify more of that property, or two properties within that number that overlap.
Six zero (60) - a negative event happened to the object being analysed and it's very reason for existing has been removed.
Double zero (or more) (00) - Very little magical properties and/or use, or an object that is very old and decayed.
Zero one (01) - Often appears in muggle made objects (plastic and other unnatural materials) and machinery that does not have magical use.
Double eight (88) - Very common to find in animals and in objects full of life, such as animated portraits.

OOC: We have arrived at the main activity! Number analysis, the thing everyone loves most! ^___^ Again you'll have about 48 hours (probably more, let's be honest) before we wrap up. Here is where you can get as creative as you'd like! Ayana would love to hear as many colourful suggestions as your character can think of.
