Abra was more of the opinion that it probably depended on the professor, and that Professor Marchand was perhaps the most trustworthy one of the lot. Plus, it was too cold to be turning down hot beverages when they were having to sit outside on a winter morning.

"Mhm. And my face." He didn't comment on the fact that it tasted nice and also warmed his insides too, but instead left it at that. Abra knew Derf's anxieties about food and drink at Hogwarts were not exactly unfounded, and he wasn't about to directly challenge that, not when Derf was always so understanding about his own worries.

So, Marchand... didn't sound so great. Abra was right on the verge of suggesting he ask the Healer for a Pepper-Up Potion before reminding himself that 1. class had already started and he was supposed to be FOCUSED now and 2. if the professor hadn't already taken one of said potions, he likely had a good reason for it. Possibly it was that he didn't like the taste, or the ear-steaming thing, or maybe he just hadn't got around to it yet. Either way, the part of Abra that wasn't all grumpy about morning lessons out in the cold certainly hoped that his head of house felt better soon.

Anyway, uh, yes. Fire and warmth and heating charms. First of all, Abra was glad to hear that it sounded like they'd be warming the area up by themselves soon, and even more glad that the question Marchand had posed was something that he actually knew a little bit about. Kind of. Abra removed a hand from the warmth of his mug and raised it into the air.

"I use warming charms on my clothes, because I'm not made for Scottish weather." He lowered his hand again and took a quick, furtive sip of his cocoa.

Gaston had just enough time to take a quick sip of coffee before the answers started coming in. The first hand he saw go up was Daisy's. He called on her, listening intently to what she had to say about hot air charms. "Very good, Miss Swann," he said. "that's an excellent use for the hot air charm!"

It seemed Leesha had something to add to Daisy's answer, and it was a valid point. Gaston nodded. "That's very true, Miss Griffel," he replied. "Hot air charms come in handy with snow removal."

A few minutes later, he saw Abra's hand go up and called on him. The boy's answer got a smile from the professor. "No, I don't suppose many of us are made for this kind of weather," he said with a laugh that quickly turned into a cough. He turned away until the coughing subsided. "Very good, Mr. Botros. That's one of the most common uses of warming charms." He probably should've used one of those spells on himself, but he felt that would be unfair to the students who didn't have the same advantage.

She momentarily thought about taking notes over what the other students were saying, but her fingers would not cooperate. Instead, she wrapped both hands around her quickly cooling mug of hot chocolate and hoped Professor Marchand would get on with the lesson as soon as possible.

"Drink this. It helps warm you from the inside out." Chloe pushed the cup into the younger girl's hands. As for the professor's question... were there any spells not mentioned? "I prefer that water heating spell, sir. It's especially useful for tea, although you have to be very specific because you want to get the temperature right for steeping."

Gaston's heart went out to Emmalyn as he watched her rubbing her hands together. Any other time, he would've ripped off his own coat and put it on her, but he didn't want her to catch his cold. All he could do was give her a quick sympathetic look. She'd be warm soon! He listened to her answer, and a smile appeared on his face. "Indeed there is!" he said. "As a matter of fact I used that spell on the tea and cocoa." Her idea of heating up water bags wasn't exactly what he had in mind for today, but he appreciated her creativity. "That's a very good idea, by the way, Miss Walsh."

Gaston beamed as he watched Chloe give a cup of tea to the younger girl who shared her name. "That was very kind of you, Miss Kettleburn," he said. "Two points to Ravenclaw for helping a younger student." As for her answer to the question, that also earned a smile from the professor. "Very good, Miss Kettleburn. It certainly is!" he said. And he would know all about the struggle of getting the temperature right for tea, having just gone through that himself.

And he was TRYING really hard not to look CERTAIN places (basically not at his best mate's lips) but his bright blues kept chances glances there. And it only made that tightness in his chest worse.

And then OF COURSE his Gryffindor had to go and mention his face and then the Hufflepuff embarrassingly found himself wondering if kissing Abey now would mean he tasted like hot chocolate...only he wasn't the only one savoring from that cup of hot chocolate any more.

"Y-yeah..." he nodded hurriedly, turning his head back towards his textbook where his hands were not busy picking at the corner of the cover for no other reason than to simply keep his hands busy.

THANKFULLY the Charms professor was beginning things, providing the Hufflepuff with a brief distraction - though he himself felt like a heating charm personified.

"There's Chaudensis, which you can use on pots and stuff to heat themselves," he offered, recalling his mum using them all the time at home on things and, well, what he used to keep his fireseed safe under his bed.

And. yeah, heating charms and insulation charms on his clothes too. Like Abey had offered.

...........and back to Abey it was then. The fifth year tried not to squirm so obviously in his seat, but that FEELING that had struck him down witnessing what he had in the corridor was being cruel.

Gaston blinked. Was he imagining things or did he just see Derf squirming? He supposed he shouldn't be surprised. The boy always seemed a little... jittery around him. He gave the Hufflepuff prefect an encouraging smile that only grew as he listened to his answer. "Yes, that's exactly what that spell is used for!" he said. "As a matter of interest, I used a mild form of that spell on these mugs, just enough to keep the tea and cocoa warm but hot enough to burn anyone. Good answer, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne."

And now they were going to be making their own warmth and she felt completely guilty about jumping ahead, but like how was she supposed to know that was going to be today's topic?!

Spell that made fire. Incendio. Obviously, which was already mentioned and one that she used rather inappropriately a few years back, but it wasn't really her fault. Saffron Stemp was annoying. She didn't regret it though and the girl was alright; well, as alright as she could be but she was still insufferable and honestly, the snake captain was just glad the girl was graduated and gone from her life. She wasn't even going to think about the fact that they COULD have been sister-in-laws. Ew. No. No. No.

"The types of spells to make heat or fire could be considered conjuration spells, since they're making something ... from nothing." Skylar said, upon raising her hand. That sounded way too simple of an answer, yet not.

Although she only needed muggle qualifications to get onto her course at university she still didn't want to fail her exams. They were needed if she ever wanted to do something else with her life. So a charm to keep her warm was needed. She was sure the professor wouldn't mind. Though it looked like he shouldn't be here at all, and instead should be resting. She decided to stay away from him if possible, really not wanting to get sick.

She nodded as he spoke, it making sense why he hadn't done some warming charms. But still, she thought it was a little bad. Someone might get sick in this cold, and that wasn't good. "Going on from what Sky is saying.... some wonder why some of these spells, incendio for example, are called charms when conjuration is actually a form of Transfiguration." She of course didn't know the answer either, but it was pretty cool little fact.

He didn't know why, but somehow Gaston didn't think Skylar was convinced by his pleas not to worry about him. A pang of guilt gripped his heart, and he shot her a quick apologetic look but nothing more was said on the matter. Her answer got a smile from him. He could always count on Skylar to come up with a good answer, and he was not disappointed! "Indeed they are conjuration spells. I'm glad you mentioned that, Miss Diggory!" he said.

Soon after, Hattie spoke up and added on to what Skylar said. Gaston thought for a moment. He'd heard many theories about the reasons behind some conjuration spells' classification as charms in school and in his time at the French Ministry but never a definitive answer on the subject. So he asnwered the only way he could. "That's a good point, Miss Paton," he said. "This is a subject that is still debated by wizardkind, so all I can do is give you my best guess. I think Incendio and other similar fire spells are classified as charms because they, as Miss Diggory mentioned, create the fire from nothing, rather than turn an exisitng object into fire. Do you have any ideas why this is?" He hoped he didn't sound like he was passing the buck by asking; he genuinely wanted to hear her thoughts on the matter.

She decided not to say anything else about his sickness.

She turned toward him at the sound of his hoarse voice. They were going to create their own warmth charms? Well, hopefully they were all super fast learners, because she didn't think she body could survive the cold for an extended period of time. When the first question was asked, the third year remained quiet for just a little bit, trying to come up with something to say that nobody else was saying. The problem was, all her initial ideas were being suggested.

Another idea came to mind, and her hand shot into the air. "What about the Conflagration Spell?" she asked. It could help them burn an object, such as wood for a fire.

Gaston managed to return Maddie's smile with a small one of his own before another bought of coughing threatened. "I appreciate you wanting to help, Miss Kemp," he said once he'd found his voice. "I'm giving two points to Hufflepuff for your kindness." He saw her hand go up not long after he asked his first question and called on her. Aha, now they were getting warmer (pun not intended)! "Yes, that would certainly work," he said, beaming. He was impressed with her answer both because it was one he hadn't heard yet and very close to the spell they'd be using. "Good answer, Miss Kemp."

Blink, blink. Well this conversation certainly took a dark turn! Gaston shuddered at the mention of Fiendfyre... or maybe that was from the sudden cold rippling through him. He wrapped his scarf a little tighter around his neck before replying, "Well, that's certainly one way to make fire! Nicely done, Miss Atwater." A little much for what he had planned today, but he'd asked for a spell that creates heat or fire and she wasn't wrong!

She answered, her smile a mix of cheekiness and mischief, choosing to go for the most out-there and dramatic fire-making spell she thought of. There were others that she knew of, but Incendio was her favourite. Incendio Maxima being right there at the top, mhm.

Anyway, the question asked.....was one that all the possible answers he could think of had been thrown out. Or, some people would think. "Some, like Incendio could be dangerous in the wrong hands. Or even if the right hands decide to get....creative," he replied flatly. Like, say, a Joker-like person. Or if Peeves was a wizard instead of a poltergeist.

Gaston eagerly returned Anna's smile. It was nice to know his generosity was appreciated! The twinkle in her eyes did not go unnoticed by the professor, and a part of him wondered what was going through her mind - more to the point, he wondered if the mention of fire had given her any naughty ideas. For the time being, he was going to focus on her answer to the question. "You're on the right track, Miss Meriwether," he said. "We'll cover Incendio in a bit more detail later. Thank you for your answer."

While Ronan's mood was a stark contrast to Anna's, their answers were along the same lines. Gaston nodded in reply. That was something he'd already thought about, and he hoped the precautions he had in place for the lessons would be enough. "That's certainly true," he agreed. "Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Mr. Carter."

She would have to grab Slate on the way out.

Anyway so there was actually a reason for the lack of heat in the classroom. She knew that Professor Marchand wouldn’t leave them out in the cold. They would be making their own heat soon. Charms that make heat or fire, there were actually a lot of those. She waited her turn with her hand in the air. ”Bluebell flames, even though it's known as cold fire it can radiate heat and it can burn through somethings.” It was pretty interesting if you asked her, you can hold it in your hands and even use it as a light if you put into a jar.

Having greeted Marchand with her usual warm greeting as well as her fellow classmates she was content with a few moments quiet.

The lesson was starting and she wasn't surprised to hear they were being asked about heat charms and fire charms. This made lots of sense given they were outside in the cold! Raising her hand she gave her answer when it was her turn, "There's hand-held flames. I'm not sure those are used for warmth though." A flame you could hold upon the palm of your hands sounded wicked but if it held any heat to it she wasn't entirely sure. Her guess would be that it didn't, clearly for safety reasons.

Finally someone had named the spell they would be practicing first! Gaston beamed at Juni as he listened to her answer. "Excellent description of the bluebell flames, Miss Primeaux!" he said. "I don't think I could've worded it better myself!"

Rylee's answer was also on the right track, and she too received a smile from the professor. "I think you might be thinking of the bluebell flames as well, Miss Prichard," he said. "Fire made by that spell can be held in one's hand, and as a matter of fact, it can be used for warmth. It radiates heat to objects held directly above it."

Was the Professor sick?

Concerned she peeked around the older girl and wondered why they were outside if he was sick, he could die of cold or something like that. She tried to remember what her great grandmother use to say.

What type of heating charms? She knew her mom did a few and so did her dad, but what were they called? Instead of answering, she decided to just stay seated super close to older Chloe.

She smiled at several of her fellow students as she sat down on the bench and listened to Professor Marchand begin the lesson. So they would be making their own warmth today. That was exciting. It had been the one subject that came very easily to her, despite the fact that she was muggle born and had until very recently not known about magic at all.

Ah. So they were learning warming charms today? That both brightened Quinn up and filled her with anxiety. She wanted to learn warming charms, greatly, and had been trying to learn them on her own. She'd also been wildly unsuccessful at learning them herself, in large part because of her wand, which seemed to despise being asked to perform such charms.

Today would be an interesting lesson for sure.

Anyhow, each of the answers Quinn could have given had she felt inclined to do so (warm air charm, incendio, bluebell flame) had already been mentioned by others, which was perfectly fine with her. It saved her from having to even consider the option of speaking up today.

A small smile spread across his lips as he thought about what he read in history books. Wizards in the medieval era sure had a lot of fun with it.

He remained silent, however. In his state, he didn't think professor Marchand would appreciate any jokes about freezing fire. But it did sound tempting to learn the spell after class.

The Gryffindor shifted around a little bit, trying to get as comfortable as she could while her bum was going NUMB in this COLD weather. It was fine for all of like TWO SECOND before she remembered that they'd have to stay out here for the duration of the lesson probably. WHO HAD THIS GRAND IDEA??? HMMM??? Looking at you Professor Marchand.

Zoryn was about to start complaining out loud too ('cause it didn't feel like he was doing anything about the lack of heating charms yet), but THANK MERLIN he started mentioning them. SOOOOOOOOOO likeeeeeeeeee when would they be getting those????? Because Zoryn couldn't think straight.

Gaston noticed the younger Chloe's sad eyes, and it tore at his heart. He should've known teaching this subject was a horrible idea.. if not for his own fears, then definitely for the effect it was having on the students! Well, it was too late to do anything about it now. All he could do was give her an apologetic look.

He was a little surprised that the Head Girl had nothing to say. Her answers were usually spot on. Oh well, maybe her answer was already mentioned. He gave her a quick encouraging smile as he waited for more answers to come in.

Lydia's thanks for the refreshments earned her a beam from the professor. "You're very welcome, Miss Beckett!" he said. He waited for her to offer an answer to the question, but that didn't happen. Well, that was okay. Maybe she'd have something to say later.

Merlin, there were a lot of quiet ones today! Gaston supposed it was probably the cold getting to them... either that or the early hour, maybe both. He briefly glanced toward a silent Felicity before his attention was diverted elsewhere by more answers coming in.

And another quiet one! Gaston supposed he shouldn't be surprised when Quinn remained silent. She didn't usually have much to say in his classes. Still, he gave her a quick encouraging smile.

Quinn's silence wasn't a surprise, but Daniel's certainly was! Gaston glanced in his direction and noticed the boy's smile. He couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking about (and if it was something related to the question). He gave him a small smile of his own, hoping to encourage him to speak up if there was something he'd like to say on the subject.

Okay, now he knew the cold was effecting the students! It had to be if even Zoryn Spinnet was silent! He gave her a quick apologetic look as he watched her shifting around. It wouldn't be much longer now!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gaston waited another moment or two, and when he was sure the students were done answering, he spoke again, "Nicely done, everyone! All of your answers were correct examples of heat and fire spells. Today we'll be focusing on two methods of making fire and, therefore warmth; the first spell we'll be practicing is, as Miss Primeaux mentioned, the bluebell flames..." His voice suddenly caught, and he turned away, taking a quick sip of coffee to soothe the burning in his throat. Merlin, he wasn't going to lose his voice, was he?
"Flames made by this spell are waterproof and radiate heat to objects held above them. They can be held or touched without burning a person or can be carried in a jar, but they will burn things like fabric or plants," he went on. He hoped they'd forgive him for the lack of lengthy explanations today. His throat was bothering him, and he didn't want the students to freeze while he was talking! "To cast, wave your wand in the direction you want the flame to go and say the incantation Flammae Caeruleum."
Gaston sighed, his trembling hand tightening around his wand. He reminded himself that it was going to be fine, that the bluebell flames couldn't hurt him, but it did little to calm his racing heart. Good Godric Gryffindor, he hated fire! But this was something his students needed to know, so he swallowed his fears and aimed his wand in the air in front of him. He repeated the incantation, and a little ball of flames the exact color of his eyes hovered over his right hand.
Now there was just one last thing he needed to cover. "To extinguish the flames, wave your wand again and say, Extinguo." He demonstrated the spell, and the blue flames disappeared. Hopefully, the students wouldn't need to extinguish anything, but it was important to teach them, just in case of any mishaps.
"I'll give you time to practice the bluebell flames," he said. "If you don't feel comfortable holding the flames -" And he could certainly sympathize, if that were the case! "-you may use a jar instead." With a wave of his wand, a pile of jars that he'd hidden under a disillusionment charm appeared at his feet. "Just aim the spell into the jar instead of the air." He picked up and opened a jar then waved his wand, sending a jet of blue flames into the jar. He screwed the lid back on and set it at his feet. "I've charmed the grass to be fireproof, but please be careful not to aim at the ground or near another person! If you need help, just raise your hand. You may start NOW!"
OOC: Sorry for the delay... this post took a lot longer to write than I expected! All you have to do for the mini activity is practice the bluebell flames in hand or in a jar. You may do both, but only one method is required for full credit. If you need help/have questions, please indicate in the title of your post. Gaston and I will be checking in periodically. You have 60-72 HOURS (8 PM EDT Jun 14 - 8 AM EDT June 15) for the mini activity!
