He was born late, a fact his mother never lets him forget. "You didn't want to leave. It's like you knew. You knew this world wasn't that great. It was either that or I was that good of a mobile home for you," she always says. Declan has counted the times she's told him the story since he was nine years old. The total currently reaches a number of one-hundred-and-nine.

His mother remembers his weight, his length, his first smile. Declan nods as she proudly tells the story. He promises to remember in case it will be useful someday but he never remembers.
