(it was something he was working on, this 'being sensitive to others' feelings' thing).

"Sounds like your dad really wants you to be good at magic?" David ended up saying, with a nonchalant shrug. Or so he hoped it appeared. "Why? What's happening at Christmas?" He kinda felt like Blaise was talking about something which he had no idea about. Huhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Now that his cards were all opened, Davie leaned back on his hands. "It was fun. I went to Peru, saw some AWESOME dragons, learned some new spells, went on a Quidditch stadium tour, which was actually kind of boring, and then did some shopping in Diagon Alley." No big deal. It had actually been an AMAZING summer but Davie didn't want to brag if Blaise's summer had been spent in, er, practical magic courses. As much as HE liked learning, having to take remedial magic was no joke.

"That reminds me, though," the second year got excited again and reached into his pocket to fish something out for Blaise. "LOOK!" he delcared brightly as he pushed the small, moving, almost-living statuette of a Peruvian Vipertooth into Blaise's hand. It was all accurate to size and everything. "The fangs on this little guy aren't really poisonous like the real thing, but they will prick ya if you let him bite you. And it will smart. And he WILL breathe fire." He nodded eagerly, hoping Blaise would like his present.

He'd only JUST gotten done laying out his cards for the trade when his friend went and asked THAT. What was happening at Christmas? "My funeral. You should come and say more nice stuff about me like you did in Airey's office 'cause maybe then my parents will regret killing me--actually, maybe you should come before that so they don't kill me to begin with." Dead. Kid. Walking. "Let's just say...they weren't too thrilled about the food fight right after begging me to stay out of trouble this year."

So yeah, his dad wanted him to be better at magic but even learning a million spells between now and December wouldn't save his butt. Might as well dictate an amazing life story to his quill, let it embellish about him after he was gone.

But enough about HIM, the summer Davie had just explained had his eyes widening in awe. Peru! Dragons! Oh Merlin, never before had he felt his summer had been such a waste--he knew it was but after this, there wasn't a doubt in his mind. Quidditch to boot! Sweet Circe. "Mate....mate, how did you convince yourself to come back after a summer like THAT?" Guaranteed, Blaise would have hidden in the attic or something.

Then there was a dragon. His dragon? He could keep it?? "Wicked!" The Gryffindor reached carefully for the almost real life dragon. "This. Is. AMAZING." Words, what were they? It took a moment of more awed staring before something finally clicked in his head. "Oh! I have something for you too!" Continuing on his careful path, he put the dragon down before reaching into his only extended robe and pulling out something he thought his friend might really like. "Saw it in the shop and remembered how much you like them."
