Both the Thornton (English) and Baines (Welsh) families are pureblood families that value order, respect, and tradition. Maris and Owain married by arrangement as had been both families custom for several generations. At the time, Maris was a professional, concert cellist, but after having her first child, left her orchestra and now gives lessons out of their home. Owain, along with his brother, Carwyn, manage the family business.

♬ Family Schooling|

In the 1990s, Thornton's great-grandfather Cadwgan Baines was enrolled at Hogwarts but was removed for homeschooling due the increasing danger at the school. Until Thornton's enrollment in 2084, no one in his family, on either side, had attended the school since before the Second Wizarding War. As part of this family history of homeschooling, Thornton received tutoring at home before his enrollment in Hogwarts, which included lessons in etiquette, art, music, and ballroom dance, in addition to preparatory magical education. Much of his education and day-to-day care was managed by the family nanny/governess, Seren.

♬ Home Life|

Life in the Baines house is structured, quiet, and proper. Social visits are carefully orchestrated, and so growing up, the Baines children only interacted with magical children that belonged to families with whom their parents were well-acquainted. Even snacks are carefully monitored, being put out by at a set time every day, with sweets restricted to special events. It is expected that the children practice their instruments at least an hour per day while at home, and the family all sits in the library together after meals to read. It is only since Thornton has gone away to school that there are impromptu social calls from his friends, which his father finds distracting, but his mother tries to encourage.

♬ First Year Notables|

Became the Pied Piper of Hamlin thanks to the Fairy Tale book, was Most Promising Firstie, tried to shake the Grey Lady's hand, awkwardly introduced self as 'Thornton Baines of the Wrexham Baines', and requested that Professor Flamsteed write to his father to persuade him of Thornton's need of having his telescope with him and of his return to Hogwarts more generally. He was selected Most Promising Firstie.

♬ Second Year Notables|

Spent most of his time practicing his cello or painting and neglecting his school work. Deepened friendships and developed a crush on a friend and sought advice from Toby, Eden and Paris. Ended the year as Most Likely to Become Minister for Magic but isolated himself from his friends out of embarrassment from telling his crush how he felt. Attended a month-long music camp and was informed by his father that he would not be returning to Hogwarts. Paige and Maddie both advocated for him and his father relented. If he'd not, Dot had plans to smuggle him in a trunk.

♬ Third Year Notables|

Continued his self-isolation well through the fall, at first due to embarrassment and then, later, because he'd convinced himself that his 'friends' didn't really care about him. This began to turn around some time in early winter. Wrote quite frequently to his cousins Adelaide and Nowell. Was voted Most Likely to Invent or Discover Something. Invited all of his friends to his family summer home.

♬ Fourth Year Notables|

Learned over the winter break that he was obligated to take on the family business and would have to begin his work over the summer. This resulted in Thornton refraining from playing the cello and painting for months. His father also signed him up for the dueling club, where Thornton finished second in his division and was recognized as Most Strategic Dueler. He and Paige became a couple in the spring,

♬ Fifth Year Notables|

Received an owl prior to the start of the year asking him to serve as Ravenclaw Prefect, which he gladly accepted. However, from the very beginning of term, a series of incidents eroded his confidence and strained his personal relationships. He pulled out of the dueling tournament after a disastrous first duel. Having abandoned his cellofor the entirely of term and unable to focus on his studies, Thornton withdrew into himself. He and Paige broke up during this time. His OWL examinations were a disheartening experience and the results were not good.

Did not return to Hogwarts, having mutually decided with his parents that a year at home was in his best interests. To rectify the gaps in his education as a result of his struggles, his parents hired Preston Kingsley, former tutor to his mother and former Hogwarts professor to provide individual instruction.
