SORTING TIME!

“Oh noooooooooooooooo. What if I don’t end up in…in…what’s the name of that house again?” he asked the next person beside him—which, well turned out to be air since he was standing at the back of the group. Mordred had been teasing Ethan about it the moment he got his letter from Hogwarts. His older cousin said he’d disown him if he don’t end up in his former house. “What if I don’t end up belonging to a house?” he thought as he made a face and turned around to see four long tables behind him, each adorned with its house colors. “Yeah, maybe I should ask the yellow group to adopt me. They look friendly enough!” he said to himself mentally as he gave them a friendly wave. “Haaaaaai!”

“Ethan Tyler Mordaunt.”

“Yeaaaaaaaah, cool ceiling they got here.” He said as looked up and admired the enchantment.

“ETHAN TYLER MORDAUNT!”

“That’s me! Uh…yeah…sorry! Uh…just, let me get up there…and…uh…” Ethan almost jumped out of his skin as his name was yelled out. “Sorry…still getting used to my new name…” he said sheepishly as he made his way through the crowd of first years. “…yeah…sorry…excuse me small person!!…sorry…” Ethan beamed at the person who was holding the sorting hat—which was by the way twitching its mouth, eager to shout out his house. The smile Ethan was wearing slooooooowly turned into a face of disgust as he felt his stomach churn. “Oh noooooooooooooooooo. It’s my turn!” Ethan inhaled, pouted his lips and exhaled as he sat on the stool and waited for the Sorting Hat to be placed on his head.

As soon as the boy’s vision was blocked, the sorting hat started to work. “Hello there.”

“HAAAAAAAI!!!” Ethan said out loud and waved at…no one in particular since he was already wearing the Sorting Hat and can’t see a thing.

“Shush child!” this is one weird boy…and a difficult one to sort! “I see. You came from a line of very capable wizards and witches. Yes, yes. Your father…ah yes, of course. Aldred was a very determined wizard, and so is your mother.”

At this point Ethan was already gaping at the crowd. How can the Sorting Hat know his parents?! “What...?” he asked out loud again as he tilted his head making the sorting hat tip to the side. “My mom and dad were sorted in the same house?” This is news!

“YES! Ah…this child. I’m beginning to wonder how in Merlin’s nightgown you ended up like this…” the sorting hat paused and grumbled ancient words. “Sit up straight, will you?” More grunts from the ancient hat. “Outspoken…clever…observant…oooh, but then you are…” The sorting hat continued to yap about his qualities and didn’t realize that it was taken off…

“Ack. I don’t like hats.” Ethan said as he removed the hat from his head and examined it. It did continue to talk even if he removed it off of his head. “You look funny when you talk!” he said as he pointed at it and laughed. He then stopped abruptly as he side glanced on his audience. Well, they were looking at him all right. “Think, Ethan. Quick.” The boy looked from the crowd, to the hat which was still talking, then to the crowd. Ethan placed his hand inside the hat and pretended to be a ventriloquist.

“You have a quick mind…but can be very careless, and…OI!” The sorting hat stopped its yapping and so did Ethan pretending to be a puppeteer. The two looked at each other, the other one clearly not impressed. “Put me back on your head so I could sort you properly!” the sorting hat frowned at the boy who just mirrored its mouth movement. “NOW!”

Ethan jerked on his seat and jammed the sorting hat on his head backwards.

“You are one weird child. But I see your strangeness can lead you to great things…” the sorting hat paused, looking like it was asking Salazar Slytherin for forgiveness.

“SLYTHERIN!”

Since Ethan wore the sorting hat backwards, the announcement was roared at the Staff Table.

Oops.

“SMITHEREENS!!!” Ethan removed the hat from his head after a few good minutes—a hatstall obviously and placed it on the stool. “Wait, Smithereens? What kind of name is that?” he asked the sorting hat as he placed his hands on his hips.

“SLYTHERIN! I PLACED YOU IN SLYTHERIN! NOW GO JOIN THEM!” If it was possible for the Sorting Hat to flame up, it would. “I should retire soon…”

Ethan shrugged, smiled and joined the group of people who applauded him the loudest. “Oh hey, Yellow People! It’s nice to be here!” he said as he sat beside a smiley Hufflepuff. “Well, this is a bit weird. Mordred said he was housed in the toughest looking house…”

Something, was clearly amiss.
