Hmm...another way to use Herbology besides medicine and potion? Sophie couldn't really think of anymore uses. Well, you could decorate with plants, but she wasn't really sure that was what the professor was getting at. Then a thought occurred to her, and she raised her hand. "We can use our knowledge of Herbology to keep us from getting attacked by a plant," she said. "If you didn't know what a Devil's Snare was, and you came across one, you'd be toast."

There was so much that Sarah did not know where to begin. Of course, she was only allowed to say one thing, so she had to pick one carefully. She thought and thought and by the time she decided on the perfect one... everyone else had covered for her.
SPOILER!!: prof 2

... "Herbology, in official terms, is the study of magical and mundane plants... this is a very broad statement though, and it doesn't represent the subject justly." She paused here to give the students the opportunity to consider what she'd just said.
"Herbology... may be broken into four categories, which your peers have identified. These include the identification of plants, their uses, their cautions and their care requirements." All of which were necessary for a truly apt understanding of the subject.

"Marissa and Sophie touched on herbology in the field of medicine and potions... how else might we use the knowledge of herbology in our world today?"

OOC: The lesson will continue in approx 15 hours. Remember, only ONE idea/thought in your response please.

Sarah was taking notes this year.. she had to get off to a good start. Leaving a page in her notebook as a cover page and another as index that she would do at the end of the year, Sarah moved onto the next clean page and began writing. There was a lot of things going on.

Right.. another question. This time Sarah was not going to overthink it, she was going to say the first thing that came to mind. She raised her hand. "One needs a knowledge of Herbology for Wandlore. Children these days" yes, she was old "need to know that the wand does not come from Ollivanders, rather the wood comes for a tree."

They had to be! Awesome things almost ALWAYS involved fairies.

Buuuuut back to Herbology. Miss Pretty Blonde Professor was going on about the four different categories Herbology was divided into. Their care requirements, the little firstie scratched her head at that one. Did that involve fairies looking after them? She'd have to ask! Maybe at the end of the lesson, cause again the fairy side-tracking thing was not good when Professor's were asking questions. Nope, nope. You needed to think about what they were saying, not about what was in your mind just yet.

So herbology had to do with plants and why did people learn about plants. Abbi shot her hand up in a speedy fashion. "I know! I know!" Nothing wrong with being a bit too eager, right? "To know how to make beautiful fairy smelling perfumes!" Yeah, she was somehow still going on about that.

"It'd be good to know stuff about Herbology because it can help you get rid of evidence and take care of the...erm....problems in your life. Some plants eat people, it's important to note those because they can come in handy one day. Other plants just have reeeally unique things about them that can be harnessed but you'll never know that or which ones until you've actually learned about them." Did that make sense? It's how she saw it.

If the plant wasn't gonna out the guy for you, the least it could do is give you something else to do the job. Then you had to watch for the plants that were simply pretty. They were wonderful to have around but not very beneficial in the end.

This was an interesting question. The uses of Herbology in real life? It was easy, but there weren't much things to answer because it would just be the same as the others. Anyway, back to the question. Kat pondered on that for a bit more to find something to actually say. She'd been a bit quiet, taking more notes.

Oh. How about... caring for plants? Because you see plants everyday in your life. At home, in Hogwarts, pretty much everywhere. There were even plants in dry places like deserts. They took that up a few terms back so Kat had a bit of knowledge on that. It was useful. "Mainly to care for the plants, especially those who have them in their homes. It's important to know which soil is suitable for them and what other things you must consider when growing them." Like brushing the teeth of Fanged Geraniums. Merlin, that was messy work. Definitely messy.

... Well, THAT was an awfully good question. Benzi had been in this lesson for a total of, what, five minutes? and it was already boring. Uncle Jake had told him it had been Mummy's least favourite subject and now the eleven year old understood why.

"We can use plants in food and tea, to make them taste better and to know which ones are good for you and which ones will kill you," he said, one hand raised and the other supporting his head. He swallowed a yawn, and blinked rapidly as his eyes watered.

It had been decided - Herbology and mornings don't mix. At all.

He wasn't exactly sure that was what she was looking for, but it seemed like a good answer. If they were able to study the plants and find out how they best survived, then they could help keep those plants growing under proper conditions. Then the plants would produce better fruits.

Herbology.

Ella knew what it was about. Not text book definition, of course, but close enough. The blonde raised her hand and waited to be called on, listening carefully to the answers that her classmates gave.

"Professor, Herbology is where you learn all about how to care for and deal with various plants that we encounter in the magical and muggle world." Yup. Pretty much.

Ella got to have a Tobias, a Forrest, and a Sophie all in one lesson? Cuteness overload. The blonde found herself giving them encouraging smiles just cause and then listened for the next question that had been asked.

Knowledge of herbology in our world? Medicine was the one Ella would have said so she tapped her chin thoughtfully, considering the other options. "Professor, being knowledgeable on this subject enables you to know which plants you should be wary of and which you can deal with without too much worry." So it was sort or precautionary in that sense.

He could've thought of a million uses for those little beauties! He was willing to bet that there were a whole host of ways one could make money off of plants that didn't necessarily include teaching or breeding. He just wasn't sure the adults in his life would be too keen on any of them. Best to stick to something safe.

So, then his hand went up. "We could use our knowledge of plants to identify other things around it like temperature changes in certain areas of the world, like. Like, knowing certain plants that grow better in cold weather could teach us alot about what kind of weather a place has or if the weather has changed any." The boy drew a breath in and carried the after-thought. "And then you could also monitor other forms of magical life, like Doxies who also like cold weather. If there were any living around it." And there were probably people out there in the world too lazy to do this themselves and would pay you handsomely to do this. Easy money. He was paying attention in Herbology class.

Kace was wondering how they could use Herbology in their world today. Like the professor mentioned, Marissa and Sophie touched upon medicine and potions. Kace was gonna say something like that but now he had to think of something else......

He raised his hand and said,

"Professor it is good to know Herbology because if you want to put plants in your garden you need to know which plants eats certain kinds and which are harmful."

He would need to know that information if he ever worked on his farm with his grandparents back home.

She took her notes quickly. Would she have missed some important information? She peered at Adi's notes. Nope, just banal information.

The girl raised her hand and said, "I think Herbology can help us in the conservation of the natural resources, valuable landscapes and endangered species."

"Naturally, Professor," he replied smoothly and slightly wiggled his eyebrows. Of course, that was only if she were looking close enough, which she would have been because his face was a nice one.

Settling into his seat, he didn't even bother answering the first question because, well, everyone else had. Very little left to add, yeah?

"A plethora of plants are used for cosmetics and beauty supplies, Professor. Not that any of you need it, but some girls use make-up to help self-esteem......and knowing which plants can be used for rouge, etc. is a superficial way to be used."

Also....shampoo. What? Did they all think that hair like this was without delicate care?

But focus, Mosef. Time to focus. He raised one gloved-hand. "Professor, it's important to understand plants, as well as their habitats, including the animals, soil, and climate. Impacting any one of those pieces of the whole could impact all of the pieces, and maintaining balance is essential."

"We learn about living organism things, prof." Aka plants. They were called those too. "Some of which bite."

Like Fanged Geraniums and the toadstools from OWLs. Her favorite.

How could they use Herbology today? Hmm. "Knowledge of Herbology can be used for defense sometimes, professor. Like how some plants were used to protect the school in the Battle of Hogwarts. Devil's Snare."

Was her fascination for the more violent plants showing?

Alice didn't think so.

It was a relief to hear that the students had some good thoughts, ideas and understandings... some of them though, seemed to misinterpret the question... just a tad. It was perhaps her fault for not phrasing it right, but what has been said, has been said, there was no taking it back.
"Good, yes, excellent," she mused and nodded at a number of the responses. There were some rather creative ones, perfume - from the ever enthusiastic first year Lioness "Aromatherapy... yes,", "Good, wandlore," from Sarah... and Merlin.
"Alexa... you're not wrong, but I would like to think I'm not training you all to be evil geniuses." Disposing of 'evidence' and 'problems' seemed a bit too morbid for a herbology lesson.

"Cosmetics, yes," Seren agreed with Ascanius, "food, tea," she continued to agree with high-flying Eagle Benzi.
"And yes of course, not being eaten by accident," Seren paused to give Alexa a look here... "caring for specific genus of plants as well as whole ecosystems is rather important, especially with regard to monitoring the use of our natural resources."

Yes, well done. Seren was satisfied. "Today we will be focusing on a particular plant," the one right beside her, in fact, "can anyone hazard a guess as to what it might be?"

OOC: The lesson will continue in approx 16 hours. Remember ONE guess and please refrain from editing your post. Thank you!
