There wasn't exactly a rule about it. She turned her attention back to the Professor who been talking about a surprize. She liked those. Lex liked even more the bright greeting she'd gotten from the Professor in turn. Her Head of House was easily one of her favourites, simply because the woman genuinely seemed happy when she saw her.
Now if only the others could adopt that attitude.
The next person to sit by her was Benjy, he got a smile that slowly faded into a look of contemplation when he asked about the turnstiles. "No actually, I didn't. Luckily I always have some loose change on me."
But all her attention was soon back to the Professor. What did Herbology involve? Lots of things! Lex's hand flew up. "We study man eating plants...and mundane plants too..." Okay, so they'd never actually learned about anything man-eating but technically her first year was a learning experience filled with a giant man-eating plant. She learned so much that year. Quote:

Right. Down to business. Gloves, check. No eating? Well, she might have had some sweets in her pockets, but she'd make sure not to take those out, yeah? As for the professor's question... Sophie was a first year, but even SHE knew a few obvious answers. She could answer, too, then, right? But, as she was looking to get on Bentley's good side from the beginning, the first year raised a lazy hand and took advantage of the wording of her question to give a less plant-related reply, "Fun?" That would either be a hit or miss answer, but from Bentley's friendliness at the beginning, Soph thought it would be a winner. Quote:

Hmm.. The study of herbology. Well, that were a lot involved for the studying in Herbology. Wade raised his hand to give an answer, "Herbology involves.. more than just learning what the plants are, but also on treating them." Least that was the basic of it in Wade's eyes. Quote:

And soon, the lesson had started! Adi had his quill poised, ready to take notes.
This first year had an idea about the study of Herbology! He quickly raised his hand. "Plants, Professor! Learning about them so we can take care of them.'' But he was unsure if it involved the study of regular plants. Quote:

Well she was calm that is until Alexa answered Bentley's first question. Her blue eyes snapped up at the lion and she gasped at the man eating plants.
Knowing they were not in the right greenhouse for that, unless she changed the greenhouses around Minerva took a few deep breaths and knew she had gasped louder than she should have so her cheeks flushed hoping that Professor Bentley didn't hear her. She scooted in her chair a little bit uncomfortable and looked down at her parchment.
Finally composing herself Min raised her hand, "Professor, Herbology is the study of plants, but also how to care for them and what they are used for." A big reason she was still in the class. She needed the what they are used for part for her healing career that she was wanting. Quote:

"The study of magical plants and their care and uses." That was a really simple question, and any first year who'd even given One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi a cursory glance could have regurgitated that definition, along with the four or so people who'd said it before her. Oh well. Quote:

If you did not know what botany was. Then this was the class for you. Quote:

She however had no chance to answer her question as the professor spoke, so she turned her attention to the woman avoiding herself and her friend trouble.
Here they were. Cassia was still clutching her bag in case there was an emergency and they had to flee. Could happen any second here, yeah? Nope, she wasn't being paranoid or overreacting at all. Better safe than sorry. And did she just tell Lex that it was a surprise. Was that supposed to be exciting? Cassia didn't appreciate surprises in here. She'd rather have a general idea of what was happening and what was going to happen. Kind of on edge.
Okay, questions were good, they were very good. The longer they stayed in the theoretical part the better and safer.
She raised her hand. " Learning how to keep away from the deadly and poisonous plants." At least that's why she was here. Quote:

Raising her hand, she said, "My mom and grandma are both potions mistresses, and they use lots of plants as ingredients in potions." Quote:

Okay. Rules down. Check. What is involved with Herbology? Keep from having deadly things? Way to make me feel any better about this class, Cassia. Everyone else seemed to be mentioning some useful things as well. So Herbology definitely had it's benefits. She raised her hand. "To learn about the good and bad things plants can do?" A legitimate conclusion from her classmates answers. Quote:

Anyways back to the question. Hmmm.."Well professor Herbology teaches us which plants to take care of correctly because if you don't there could be consequences or it could die." Which is somewhat true because every plant is different.
Seren listened as a number of students raised their hand and contributed an answer to her question. It was nice to see variations in their responses too, and neither were wrong. After mumbling the appropriate "Yes, excellent!" and "Absolutely!" 's Seren clapped her hands together and paused to see if there were any last minute ideas anyone wanted to add...
No?
... "Herbology, in official terms, is the study of magical and mundane plants... this is a very broad statement though, and it doesn't represent the subject justly." She paused here to give the students the opportunity to consider what she'd just said. "Herbology... may be broken into four categories, which your peers have identified. These include the identification of plants, their uses, their cautions and their care requirements." All of which were necessary for a truly apt understanding of the subject. "Marissa and Sophie touched on herbology in the field of medicine and potions... how else might we use the knowledge of herbology in our world today?" OOC: The lesson will continue in approx 15 hours. Remember, only ONE idea/thought in your response please.
