Aaaaand then the Professor started running his mouth off. Oakey couldn't follow any of it, more than half the things Flamsteed said just leaped right over his head. Except for the Death of a Star...Deathstar? Keep your Mind in Focus Oakey!
He looked over nervously at the stars they had all made. "Professor, even if you say our stars have a long life ahead of them. Won't we all be in danger once they become Black Holes?" Come on Flamsteed, haven't you ever read any of those crazy science fiction Comics! creating a Black Hole on Earth pretty much dooms everyone! Life as they know it will get sucked into the Death Traps they just created! Leave it to a Hufflepuff to think of ways they all could die. Yes, he had read about some of the unfortunate instances involving the death of a Hufflepuff or two at Hogwarts. Probably why that boy didn't die last term at the mercy of the jaws of that plant. He hadn't been a Hufflepuff.
"In theory, yes, stars have the potential of becoming black holes but there is one liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle snare to that," he said while pinching his thumb and index finger together to emphasize the liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle in his speech. "Only big stars, like REALLY big stars...think 3 times the mass of our sun, become black holes after they get crushed under its own gravity. Your stars are noooooooooooooo where near that size and will turn into white dwarfs when they evetually run out of fuel."

"Jeffery is a black dwarf, meaning that he is a star that......." Awkward pause. ".......longer emits significant heat or light."

Or maybe he should have just lied to her and said it was a black hole...only his scientific mind wouldn't allow him to do such a thing. Quote:

"I would be in your star's best interest to release it," he said with a grin. Had he let slip that they would be doing that next? Or were students just intuitive enough to have figured that out on their own? "In their jars and in our atmosphere increases the risk of them becoming black dwarfs. And Miss Ella just opened up a MASSIVE can of worms. "What you are asking, Miss Ella, requires some extensive knowledge of astrophysics," he said with a small chuckle while tapping his sundial. "Unfortunately we do not have the time to go into as much detail as needed to fully answer your question briefly, but black holes CAN and on occasion do merge and when two black holes are closely orbiting each other they are called a binary black hole. a massive amount of energy is released in the form of jets. Meanwhile, the movement of these massive bodies disturbs the fabric of space-time around them, sending ripples of gravitational waves radiating outward. They won't exactly create a super black hole - doubling in size or anything like that - but they may take a sort of honeymoon trip together from one galaxy to another."
Probably not a very comforting thought, but black holes were more like the boogie man of outer space. Much more frightening things to worry about than them. Quote:

Airey chuckled and tried to figure out how best to word this response without sounding too morbid. "As I said earlier, Miss Potter, protostars form in nebulae," he began but pointing back to the chart on the board which unfortunately did not have the nebula stage drawn on it. Something to think about for next time. "Within a nebula, there are varying regions where gravity causes dust and gas to 'clump' together. These 'clumps' gather more and more atoms which causes their gravitational attraction to other atoms to increase and pulls more atoms into the 'clump.' As you can imagine, all these atoms interacting with one another creates a very unstable environment making protostars very unstable."
And he had gone into detail about how a protostar becomes a star earlier, so he left things there for now.
Pausing again for a few minutes while students tended to their stars if needed and to see if there were further questions, he once again glanced at his worthless sundial and then back to the class.
"If there are no further questions I would like you all to come up and collect your stars," he said while making a rather dramatic gesture towards the table. "If your star needs tending to while we make the transition outside, please do so. This will be your last chance to ensure that your star is healthy before the main event."
He then grabbed his coat and threw it over his suit. They had brought coats with them too, yes?
"When you are ready if you could please follow me out to the Tower Patch."
And then with the grin of a kid in Honeydukes with a billion galleons to spend, he lead the way out of the classroom.Please RP your characters collecting and tending to their stars and then head on over and post in the Tower Patch Class will continue in about 18 hours from this post.
