which is 05 - 05 = 0
My first Challenge Number is 0..."
Then standing back for Eino, so he can start the second number calculations... "Yup. Thank you, Penny," Fina said at the young Hufflepuff girl. Zero... Cipher challenge... interesting. Quote:

Moving up to the board, she wrote out the equations first so she wouldn't forget before starting to move onto the calculations. With nothing mentioning the Destiny number, she almost forgot about her already. Thank goodness too. Evelyn didn't want to end up in a bad mood for the rest of the lesson. First Challenge Number Day of Birth - Month of Birth
20 - 8 (August)
2 - 8 = -6 Second Challenge Number Year of Birth - Day of Birth
2058 - 20
(2 + 0 + 5 + 8) - (2 + 0)
(15) - 2
6 - 2 = 4 Third Challenge Number Second Challenge Number - First Challenge Number
6 - 4 = 2
Alright, this really was harder than the pinnacle numbers, especially since she hadn't done these Challenge numbers before. Were they supposed to keep the negative signs for the final answer? Especially when calculating the third challenge number? Or just leave them off entirely since it didn't matter if it was a positive or negative in the end.
Unless she did the calculations wrong, considering it only said to subtract the two numbers, yet in the book, the equations for both the pinnacles and challenges were just a little different from one another. What if they wrote the book wrong? Eh well, Hadley would tell her if she were wrong. Meh, being wrong. Not cool. Evelyn was next with the third challenge number, which she wrote out so very clearly. "Good job," Fina complimented the sixth year. Who conveniently now only had one more challenge number to calculate. Technically speaking. Quote:

He first wrote down the numbers he was using, then proceeded with the calculation. After using his ever so handy fingers to count he concluded his not so challenging challenge number calculation.
He really hoped he wasn't wrong, but then again this wouldn't be a first for him. Then he did that ugly forced smile again, where he was basically just showing his teeth to class. "Perfect!" Truthfully, it was; for someone who seemed so nervous about numbers, Eino actually solved that second challenge number pretty well. Quote:

He was already irritated by some certain person and he did not need another.
Ooooh...the professor had chosen him! For the fourth challenge number. Good. Smiling at the woman some, the lion boy rose from the chair and walked to blackboard standing beside Evelyn.
*stare*
Eh...he needed to calculate that number, right...yes. So, taking his eyes off someone else, Josh looked at the blackboard instead and started his work.
That was it, right? It should have been like that...however...there was one point Josh was unsure of: Was he supposed to subtract while calculating the year of birth number as well? Hmmmm... That way it would be like;
2057 - 8
(2-0-5-7) - 8
-10 - 8
([-]1-0) - 8
-1 - 8
= -9
Meeeeeeeeh...that, to be honest, did not look so reasonable. Then, instead he was going to go with the one he had written on the board. If he was wrong, Professor Hadley would mention it after all. Was he doubting himself? Judging from the look as he checked over his work, Josephina suspected that the Lion Boy was. "Three is correct for your final challenge number, yes. Thank you."
Turning back toward the class, "If you haven't attempted so, feel free to begin work on calculating your challenge numbers and I'll be around to check your numbers." Hadley instructed, as she started first with a young Slytherin's parchment nearby.... *********************************** Quote:

Uhh... she had some negative challenge numbers. " Professor?" Helena asked, with her hand in the air. " Is it alright if some are negative?" Or maybe she didn't do something right? "Negative numbers don't matter. Pay no mind to that," Didn't she say that already? Hmm. These students really needed to listen when others asked questions. "But anyway, you've calculated all four of your numbers backwards. Check on the board for the four examples if you're unsure of what the textbook is saying." Quote:

Chloe's parchment: First Challenge Number
Day of Birth - Month of Birth
5 - 8 (August)
5 - 8 = -3
Second Challenge Number
Year of Birth - Day of Birth
2056 - 5
(2 + 0 + 5 + 6) - 5
(13) - 6
4 - 5 = -1
Third Challenge Number
Second Challenge Number - First Challenge Number
-3 - (-1)= -2
Challenge number #4
- month - year of birth
8 - 2056 = 8 - (2 + 0 + 5 + 6) =
8-13= -7 Chloe goped she did it right. "The third challenge number is correct, but you've written the numbers backwards from the formula," Fina said, examining the Lioness' work. "And your fourth number is wrong. Make sure you reduce that 13, as you did before, but also it's year of birth minus the month." Writing these numbers backwards was a common error. Quote:

Why were they still asking the same questions? "People just listen." He murmured to no one in particular.
Huh. But maybe it was better that they kept asking questions.
That meant that Hadley couldn't make them do MORE calculations. "PEOPLE! Keep asking questions!" Legend said loudly. Making a line between his Pinnacles he began to write out his Challenge Numbers.
Another repeating number? That was a sign he had done it right....right? Hopefully. The whole negative number thing made it seem wrong. "You should reduce the 14 to a single digit for your second and fourth challenge numbers before you do the subtraction." Because that was how they did things in numerology; reduce first. Not to mention there was no 9 challenge number. "So your second through fourth numbers are incorrect." But at least he didn't record the numbers backwards. Quote:

Or was September first 01/09? Presley decided to calculate both, just in case.
Presley sighed in relief. The answer was the same no matter which order she put her month and day in. Her first challenge number was 8. Presley flipped the pages of her book. What did that mean? "Doesn't matter really, but for consistency sake, you should write the calculation out as one minus nine, since that's the way the equation is written in the textbook," Fina explained, noting the confusion on the young claw's face. OOC: as an FYI, lesson with either close by 1pm tomorrow or when I get home from work at ~10:30pm. So keep this in mind if you want class participation credit for doing calculations =)
