Headmaster's Office: September 1, 1995

Severus watched as the timid frame of his daughter pushed open the office door. He clutched the edge of his seat, knuckles going white. "Miss Pierce," Dumbledore stated. "It's a bit late perhaps, it would not be wise to be wandering the castle at this hour. Especially seeing as you only just arrived." He gave her a soft smile and motioned the fidgeting girl to the chair in front of him, the chair immediately next to her father. "Tell me what is on your mind."

Ava did as instructed, scooting up into the large armchair. "Now," the headmaster started again, "what is it that has you up at such an hour?" She fidgeted, twisting her fingers in her lap and refusing to make eye contact. Beside her, Severus watched her carefully, agitatedly thrumming his fingers on the arm rest. Finally, the girl spoke.

"Sir," she started, "I was wondering if... if the sorting hat ever makes mistakes." The air hung still, silent. Dumbledore leaned back in his chair.

"The sorting hat does not make mistakes," he said cautiously, "though I suppose one might believe he or she belongs to another house. The sorting hat does not usually take the student's preferences into consideration," he paused, "however I do believe that an exception was made to that guideline this evening."

At that, they both had to stare. "But sir, it didn't," Ava confirmed. The Headmaster gave a knowing glance in the Potions Master's direction before continuing.

"Then I suppose it doesn't afterall."

After his daughter had headed back off to bed, Severus stood and began to pace. "So you're saying the hat did take her opinion into consideration?" he asked. Professor Dumbledore gave a chuckle.

"Yes, in fact, I'm nearly positive." Professor Snape gave him a confused glance. The Headmaster continued. "I believe that she was up there for such a long period of time because she was arguing about her placement. Thus the hat took her strong will into consideration and placed her in Gryffindor," he smiled, eyes gleaming behind his spectacles.

The Potions Master sighed, running a hand through his hair. His daughter was on the road to becoming a self-absorbed troublemaker. Not that he had any say on the matter, she didn't even know her father was alive.

Severus stopped his pacing, sitting back down in his chair. Dumbledore reached across the desk, patting him on the shoulder. "She looks exactly like you." And at that, he had to smile.
