CHAPTER FOUR: Allergies to Mandrake

Once I left the office I went to my common room. I passed William along the way, he did not look at me, so I continued on, slightly saddened that he still could not see me. I entered my common room and sat in front of the fire (this was the normal way a couch was, unlike the Slytherin's).

I stared into the flames, I slowly put my hand toward the flames, I mean, why not? Not like I could get burned, actually, when I began to think of it, that was one of the only things I hadn't tried as of yet. I could feel weather. I could feel the cold, I feel the heat, I could feel wind, but never before had I tried fire.

I placed my hand in the flames, then instantly recoiled with pain and shock. I stared at my hand, already blistering. Despite the pain, I smiled and I laughed. Wow, plenty have things have changed recently, maybe I'm coming back? I thought to myself. I placed my hand in the fire again, just so I could feel it. Again I recoiled with a yelp.

Smiling, I ran down to the great hall, while blowing air on my burnt hand. Upon arriving at the great hall, Scorpius was shocked by me jumping into the seat next to him. He stared at me, then muttered, "What the heck Bethany?!"

"I need to talk to you, now," I told him, yanking at his hand. He reached down to swipe my hand away, but instead I just pulled him off the bench.

He fell back with a yelp, several girls near-by snickered at him, "Umm..." he stammered.

"Oh, for merlin's sake, come ON!" I pulled at him again. He groaned and stood up.

Muttering to me, "You better have a good explanation for this Stone...", he followed out of the great hall and into the corridors.

I smiled from ear to ear, practically jumping, I reached out my burnt hand.

His eyes went from slits to a wide stare of shock to a look of horror. He picked up arm, inspecting my hand, "And you are happy about this, why?"

I didn't wait a moment, "Because," lying extra stress on that word I explained, "I feel it! The flames effected me! They gave me blisters!" I could have done two laps around the right then, with the amount of energy I had.

"...You know how insane that sounds, right?"

I started giggling, again, I was just way too happy. What a good week I had been having.

"You are insane...and I am a friend of an insane person that no one can see, hear, or feel..."

"You make me sound like an imaginary friend," I responded, still giddy. Then I remembered I had yet to tell him about the sorting hat, "OH! Guess what?" without waiting for an answer I continued, "I'm sorted!"

He blinked at me, absorbing what I had just said, "You..How?"

"I stood inside a bookshelf and went under the sorting hat. It sorted me," I stated mater-of-factly.

"...I'm going to pretend that made sense," was his simple answer. I smiled again, flashing my bright smile.

"Now all I'm waiting for, is to be able to pick up and taste food..." I responded jokingly, although it was perfectly true. I knew how good the food here was, I could smell it. But I had yet to be able to taste it.

Scorpius was still staring at my burnt hand, as if watching it would make it heal. I knew that eventually I would start to get annoyed with my burnt skin, but at that moment, I was ecstatic about the pain, and, quite frankly, rather disappointed that he did not show the same enthusiasm that I did. "Oh come on, this is a good thing, right? Something," other then you, I added in my head, "affected me! I could feel something!"

"But...did you have to burn your hand?" he asked, exasperated. "I mean, that's really going to hurt you, and because we can't treat it, it will probably scar..."

I groaned, rolling my eyes, "Who cares if it scars Scorp? I mean, who else is going to see them. At this rate, you'll be the only one ever to see me. Not even my own stinking family can tell I'm right in front of them!" I began to yell near the end, barely holding back my tears. I turned away from him, my joyful mood immediately replaced by the frustration and hopelessness in my whole situation. Great, thanks a lot teen-age hormones, JUST what I need I thought sarcastically.

I knew Scorpius still hadn't moved, and didn't what to do, now embarrassment was added to the mix of emotions. Why was that when I wanted to disappear, I was easily seen? I didn't know what to do, I didn't know where to go. So I just said, in a flat voice, "You ought to get to class, it would be starting soon."

He was silent for a moment more then, "Well? Are you coming with me?" He had herbology. Gryffindor's didn't have that class with them this year.

"No. I have divination, I was sorted into Gryffindor," with that, I decided it was best that I walk away. I got maybe a meter away when he stepped forward and grabbed my arm. I jumped at the contact (Okay well, maybe I wasn't quite used to things being able to touch me).

I turned and looked at Scorpius, I tried to say 'what', but my voice failed me. Instead he spoke, a mischievous grin creeping onto his face, he wiped it away and showed a mock look of disappointment, "Oh, so now you are going to skip out on your BEST friend, who is inviting you to go flying, just to go to a dumb divination class?"

I couldn't help the showing the small smile that tugged on my lips, "I don't believe hearing an invitation."

Now he allowed his smile to spread across his whole face, "Come on."

He led me back into the great hall, pausing briefly to ask a class-mate of his a question, "Yo, what are we doing in Herbology today?"

The boy considered then responded, "Professor Longbottom is going to have us handle Mandrakes this time..."

Scorpius groaned, "Darn it all, I'm allergic to Mandrake leaves. Can you tell him that I'll just stay here and work on the last paper assignment he gave us."

"Yeah, sure thing Scorp," the boy walked off toward his class. Once he was out of sight we dashed off, towards the quidditch pitch, having made a detour so Scorpius could grab his latest LIGHTNING BOLT 2016. Instantly we were upon the broom, flying high above the ground, it was wonderful.

A few hours later I was taking a nap in the library. It had started out as a quiet place to think, then a small rest that turned into a nap, well at one point I was deep asleep, dreaming...(I call it dreaming, but is there a simple word for when you are have a night mare? night-maring? Or rather, Day-maring? maybe, fright-daring...)

In my day-mare I was graduating. I had stepped forward, the headmistress handed me my diploma. I was supposed to make a speech. I stepped forward but when I started talking, everyone started mumbling, they couldn't hear me. Next thing I knew, William was saying, "She's gone and done it again, just floated off.."

Then I was in the great hall, two men stood dressed in muggle suits, beckoning me, "Come with us," they kept saying. I went with them, they took to the school grounds, one was about to speak when my scene changed again.

I was in Malfoy Manor (Easily distinguished by the people in the room; Scorpius, his father Draco, his mother whom I didn't know, Narcissa (his father's mother), Lucius (his father's father), and his Aunt Bellatrix (who every one knew to be dead, having died during the great battle)). I was alone in a room with Bellatrix, not quite alone, Scorpius stood behind me colored like starch. Bellatrix couldn't see me. She only saw Scorpius. She screamed the Crucio curse. Instead of hitting Scorpius, like it was meant, it hit me. I collapsed in withering pain, unable to see, unable to hear, unable to stop screaming....A voice echoed in my ears, getting louder, "Bethany...Bethany! Wake up!"

I woke up gasping for breath, I saw Scorpius standing there, looking confused and worried. "You were having a night-mare Beth...a bad one at that.."

"Oh.." I said, shaking at the memory of it. It had seemed so real, but Scorpius and I were in the library, not in Malfoy Manor.

There was silence for a moment, that type of silence my day seemed full of, where neither knew exactly what to say, or how to say it. Scorpius broke the silence, "What happened? You were silent when I came in here, then a second later you started screaming..almost fell out of your chair!"

"I was um.." I contemplated lying, who wants to hear that their long-dead aunt had been trying to hit crucio them but hit their best friend instead? Then I decided on the truth, it was better to have an honest friendship. I said the calmest, most boring voice I could, "I was being tortured accidentally by your long dead aunt who was trying to torture you."

He sat down next to me, a blank look on his face, "Oh."

I nodded, "Yep."

He looked at me, his blue-green eyes filled with worry, "Are you okay?"

I gave him a convincing smile, "I'm fine."

"Okay but if you need something from the infirmary, I can always—" I cut him off.

"Scorpius, I'm fine, really, I'm fine."

He hesitated, then nodded, "You know, you missed potions. It was great! Professor Longbottom's kid, Frank, blew up his cauldron and sent wart remover all over the dungeons. But he had done something wrong, and it grew worts over EVERY one, we got them in some pretty uncomfortable places. His twin, Alice, had to do the reverse spell, because the professor's wand was even coated in warts!"

We both burst into laughter, forgetting our worries. I would be alright, as long as Scorpius was okay, I would be alright...
