Default Review: The Peanuts Holiday Collection on Blu-ray

For young and young-at-heart fans of the Peanuts series by Charles M. Schulz, the deluxe holiday collector's edition is a absolute must-have, especially in enhanced Blu-ray format. Three well-loved specials are packaged in the set, including It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and bring the vivacity of not only the colours of the animation, but of the wonderfully complex and angst-ridden characters. Charlie Brown as his gang of friends, from pensive Linus to bossy Lucy, annoying little sister Sally, confident Peppermint Patty and her faithful sidekick Marcy, and of course, Snoopy and Woodstock.

While Charlie Brown moans on sceptically about the true meaning of Christmas in A Charlie Brown Christmas, his best friend and moral conscious Linus Van Pelt demanded everyone to listen to him about the fact that the holiday was more than just presents and putting on a good play. All of the stories were feel-good by the end, but had enough conflict and even a bit of drama to carry them within a strong character-driven plot. The characters may have been young children, but they were not without their own inner turmoils and anxieties, just as viewers of all ages.

Whether it be searching for The Great Pumpkin and refusing to go harassing random strangers for candy in the form of trick-or-treating, as Linus put it, or realising there was a bigger history to Thanksgiving than just turkey and trimmings, the Peanuts stories will carry on for decades and generations to come. The stories are universal, easy for all ages to relate and sympathise with. The specials do that with just as much earnestness as the original comics by Shultz did.

The Peanuts Holiday Collection (It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown / A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving / A Charlie Brown Christmas) is out now on Blu-ray and DVD combo pack.
